Indian Students Rally in Australia

6/08/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

picture-1913

A massive crowd of South Asians marched on Sydney’s Hyde Park on Sunday to protest what many are calling scathing inequalities. Indians have been frequently mistreated in Australia since they began migrating to the continent, with muggings, beatings, and hate crimes commonly occurring in Sydney and other cities. The rally peaked with impassioned speeches by the victims of violent crimes, who ultimately called for protection from the government, which they claim hasn’t enforced equality in Australia.

“Survivor” Contestant Dies During Filming

6/01/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under International Affairs

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Subjecting relatively normal human beings to extreme physical challenges in ridiculous, nutrition deprived conditions as they desperately make alliances can’t always end in champagne wishes and caviar dreams. Sure, it all sounds entertaining and harmless, but as the popular saying goes, “it’s all fun and games until someone has a heart attack and dies.”

That is exactly what happened on the set of a reality show that unfortunately wasn’t VH1’s “I Love Money”. Noncho Vodenicharov, a 53-year old former stuntman, singer, and Mayor had the utter misfortune to lose his life during the filming of Bulgaria’s version of the popular reality show Survivor.

“It’s all fun and games until someone has a heart attack and dies.”

While details are a bit fuzzy, odds are the victim had just finished swimming three miles after days of little nourishment and/or sleep in attempts to win immunity to save all of the members of his alliance from being voted off. With Noncho’s passing, no one is quite sure who will be booted at the next tribal council meeting, since Vodenicharov had totally promised everyone he had their backs. Pirates Show Soft Spot for Birthdays

6/01/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

Nine months ago, Matthew Maguire was taken hostage by a Nigerian militant group that stormed the oil services ship that he and 26 others occupied. This was a routine activity for the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, which opposes the Nigerian government and seeks freedom for those living in the area. Such hostage situations have proven an effective fundraising measure for MEND and similar groups, and hostages are now readily available due to the recent piracy boom. Hostages are so available, in fact, that MEND starts releasing members of a captive group before any demands are even considered by companies and governments.

Since last September, all but Maguire were released by MEND, each with a different justification. Greg Tomlin was let go because he hurt his leg. Walter Driggs said he missed watching 24 hour news, and Peter Cather said he was feeling seasick (he’s a freaking shipmate). Regardless, the militant groups holding these people are using any excuse to release them, indicating either blind humanitarianism or an ineffective business model.

Matther Maguire was released today because June the 1st is his birthday. MEND reportedly hung on to him for this long because his knowledge of traditional sea shanties kept the militants’ spirits high. Their tearful goodbye gives hope to the belief that pirates and sailors may one day live in harmony again.

Comatose Toddler Brings it Back with Disco

5/27/09 - Posted by Jennifer Hodges under International Affairs, Music

Did you know that the earth-shattering music of ABBA is powerful enough to raise the dead? Ok - that’s an exaggeration - but the Swedish Pop group’s tunes can bring children out of a coma.

After suffering a severe case of meningitis and a heart attack, three-year-old Layla Towsey’s fate looked bleak. The English toddler soon fell into a coma and was put on life support. Her mother was even faced with the heart-wrenching task of kissing her daughter goodbye. However, this little dancing queen wasn’t ready to walk into the light. Five days after being completely unconscious, the little girl started emerging from her coma by humming and singing the “Mamma Mia” soundtrack, proving that God is totally into 70’s disco, and that the “tunnel of light” really is more like a lit-up dance floor.

The child had learned the songs after watching last summer’s sing-a-long blockbuster over and over again. Layla slowly regained full consciousness, and has since made a complete recovery. Now close your eyes, think of Divine Intervention, and enjoy the vision of Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep’s smiling faces. Amen.

Scientology On Trial In France

5/27/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

The always controversial Church of Scientology met opposition in France, where accusations of fraud recently brought six church leaders to trial. Scientology faces the threat of being banned in the country, which has apparently been a lucrative target for its business side. Several plaintiffs claim that they were pressured into joining the church, a situation that led to them spending tens of thousands of euros on books, lessons, and potato clock that supposedly read their personalities.

The church’s legal representation insists that the dispute is over the possible occurrence of embezzlement and not whether or not the organization is, in fact, a religion. While joining the church requires a substantial monetary investment and the seeking out of recruits through the social networks of members, Scientologists swear that this is not a pyramid scheme. Although if it were…genius.

Following the complaints, several former members retracted their claims. The church of Scientology paid them off in amounts sufficient to cover their losses, raising even more questions about the inner workings of this somewhat cultish religion. In the end, however, it looks like Scientology is fueled by the same thing that drives every organization of human beings: $.

Busts 4 Justice Fight for a Fair Priced Rack

5/08/09 - Posted by Mara Siegler under Health, International Affairs

Marks & Spencer, a British retailer akin to Macy’s, has been charging more for larger bras in a clear display of prejudice against big breasts. The bigotry of the country towards large-meloned lasses is a well documented and embarrassing historical footnote, along the lines of its former irrational hatred towards other things men love such as booze, sports, easy women (of any size boob), and being given money for free. In more recent years however, many have stood up and supported D-cups, fighting for their right to get married and adopt children.

Facebook group Busts 4 Justice is just one such Huge Tits Rights support groups, and has been working on an arduous, full-nipped campaign to get the department store to lower its prices on tent-sized lingerie for a year. Finally, today, they have clinched a victory in the fight for pricing equality for all! Marks & Spencer has agreed to eliminate a surcharge on it’s DD and up sizes and even took out a full page ad, solemnly and poignantly apologizing for the oppressive hardship they’ve caused with the proclamation, “We Boobed!”

And while this is a bouncing, joyous occasion, it is just one battle in the war Busts 4 Justice must continue to fight.  They have released the following statement: “Busts 4 Justice remain committed to making things better for busty women on the high street, but for now we’re happy just to be able to encourage all ladies to reward themselves and their boobs with some properly fitted, fairly priced lingerie.” Justice!

Get the Hop Outta Australia // Military Begins Kangaroo Slayings

5/08/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

While most people think that Australia, a land of wildlife diversity, is a place where marsupials like the kangaroo, the koala bear, and the Australian live harmoniously, we must remember that the former prison is governed by same fundamental rules that have allowed mankind to flourish: land rights. Though the kangaroo is the symbol of Australia, much like Americans have their bald eagle, the difference is one of population, and a rampant animal population demands a periodic cleansing, national animal or not.

The start of the military’s campaign to kill 6000 kangaroos was met with vows to protest from animal rights groups, who were caught off guard by the sudden news and barely had enough time to grow enraged before its commencement. The army feels that the massacre will allow endangered plants and insects in the area to grow freely, unhindered by the nuisance of too many kangaroos, or as the locals call them “giant stinking rats.”  Also, the damn things were all over the rugby field and it’s nearly training season.

The UK Loves to Hate

5/05/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

In order to make it known exactly what sorts of people the British just wont be able to mingle well with, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has released a list of 16 people who are banned from entering the UK. Among the joyful bunch are Muslim terrorists, Jewish terrorists, Nazis, KKK leaders, assorted racists, and, the most hated of all, crossing guards. One of the only Americans on the list is a gem by the name of Michael Savage, a man who loves to hate and hates to be a reasonable human being. Another is pastor Fred Phelps, a harbinger of doom in a bolo tie.

Reasons given for the ban vary from person to person. Some folks have a history of violence that can’t be redeemed. Others have never physically hurt a soul, but have the potential to poison the minds of the impressionable. The binding quality of the group appears simply to be that they are all dicks, and the English have their hands full handling the dicks they already have. While every country bans a few people from entering, making the list public conveys a standard that will be a warning to everyone. If there’s one thing the UK won’t tolerate, it’s the intolerant.

Egypt Aims to Cure Swine Flu with Pork Dinners

4/29/09 - Posted by Mara Siegler under International Affairs

Though Egypt has no reported cases of swine flu, the country has decided to take a murderous precautionary measure. Not only shall first born pigs be smote, but all 300,000 have been ordered to death. Officials will also take steps to patrol the rivers looking for any tiny piglets swaddled in a floating basket.

Pig farmers are not happy (surprise!). The government, however, does not understand their concern because the meat of the pigs will still be available for sale. And besides, this only effects the 10% of the population that is Christian and can eat pork, while the 80% of Muslims are forbidden to enjoy the glory of bacon.

But alas, there is hope for the cousins of Babe and Wilbur! In protest, many farm workers have left their posts and refused to kill any pigs, so it may not happen at all. The same thing occurred in 2008, when the government ordered a mass genocide of four-legged beings after fear of disease arose, but it was never put into action. Back in 2006, when bird flu arrived in Egypt, pigs were suppose to be kept separate from birds as well as humans, but this also…wait for it…never happened.

Swine and Christ-lovers are waiting to see how things will play out with baited breath. Mad cows, avian species, and that one monkey suspected of spreading AIDS to the United States have sent their support with well wishes and prayers.

Guest Post // Tobias Talks Twitter Search

4/24/09 - Posted by Tobias Peggs under Industry, International Affairs, OneRiot News

Every so often, we welcome a OneRiot staff member to share some words on our blog. We have to be careful with this - because everyone’s always so high on dry-erase markers - but most of the time it works out pretty well. Here’s the latest - a deeper look at Twitter search from OneRiot GM (and acid house evangelist) Tobias Peggs.

It’s about time.

Before I got sucked into the internets, I spent several years as a magazine journalist mainly writing about music (and the occasional supermodel). Now Carmel has convinced me to start writing for the OneRiot blog on a regular basis. My initial thought is to write about what I’m doing – which essentially boils down to helping grow OneRiot, trying to keep up with a triathlon training schedule, and ambiently learning from other cool companies (like Twitter), collectives (like Cypher13) and random cool dudes (like @Jeffrey) that I stalk via social media but who probably don’t know who I am. Let’s see how it goes… and see what you think.

This first post is focused on the first theme. We recently launched a new twist on Twitter Search. We learned a lot from doing that – from so many angles. (I’ve got future posts in the mental pipeline on “doing a launch with and without a PR agency – pros and cons” and “how I was schooled to be authentic, by a social media pro who would hate to be called a social media pro.” But more of that later…). For now, the focus is on what we did and why.

Let’s start by echoing John Battelle, who has acknowledged the growing appetite for search results from the “super fresh” web. The web’s most valuable content increasingly can be found in what our friends and other people are saying, sharing and looking at online. Traditional Search Engines (TSEs) just can’t keep up with this new era of “people preference,” solely because their systems of gathering information don’t really support it. Broadly speaking, TSEs index the web based on variations of a web page’s “juice,” which builds up over time. So, logically, TSE’s will struggle to surface fresh, socially-relevant search results because the new, interesting stuff hasn’t been around long enough to build enough juice to rate highly in those indexes. That’s the hole (and it’s a big one!) that realtime web search engines like OneRiot are now filling.

Given its current – and justified – buzz, Twitter Search tends to be peoples’ first port of call to consume search results from the real time web. If you search for something like “Pontiac” on Twitter (ahem, RIP) you’ll see an explosion of conversation from thousands of people in relation to that query – which is pretty exciting to see. In other words, Twitter Search surfaces the conversations happening right now around that query. Your search results experience is essentially telling you “Your query is a hot term! Lots of people are talking about it!” If you parse through, or join, the conversation, you might find out why.

If you do that same search on OneRiot, the experience is quite different. OneRiot’s Twitter search surfaces the content that people are talking about right now, so your results experience is essentially telling you “Check out this page, or blog, or video! Lots of people are talking about it!” It’s search results as you know it, but the content is drawn from the realtime web (i.e. the results are based on what your friends are say, sharing and looking at online right now).

Now, of course, seeing – and joining – the conversation is a key piece of Twitter’s huge appeal. So you’ll also notice with OneRiot’s Twitter Search that we do show the conversation as well – but we group the tweets that have shared a link to a specific piece of content. (Of course, we de-dup all the shortening services for you, so links from bit.ly, tiny.url, tr.im etc that point to the same piece of content are treated as one by OneRiot).

Here’s where the two search opportunities really differ: From Twitter Search you could join a worldwide fast flowing conversation about Pontiac. From OneRiot’s Twitter search you could join a targeted conversation about a specific piece of content – for example, the NPR story that started the buzz (this is the top search result on OneRiot Twitter Search as I write… of course, because this the realtime web, it’ll probably be different when you look).

Our take on Twitter Search was a good experiment, and you’ll start to see some of the awesome things we’ve learned from it filter into the main OneRiot.com search experience soon. In the mean time, if you have any ideas or feature requests, feel free to @tobiaspeggs and let me know, or log them on our community wiki.

(That wasn’t so bad, was it?)

Tobias - you get a gold star.
