This Week in Music: Edition #2

11/02/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Music

Welcome to another wonderful week, and a whole different month. While you’re scrubbing makeup off your faces and trying to get that silver Lady Gaga hairspray off your mop, why not settle into November with the first Music-Monday column since daylight savings?

The Week in Music
First off, those Gaga costumes. Millions of college girls nationwide dressed up as the goofy popstar with their sorority sisters, rocketing musician costumes (including Michael and Miley) to the top of the costume popularity/unoriginality list, just behind pale, chain-smoking teen idol vampires.

Another great thing about holidays—especially weird ones like Halloween—is that artists try to do over-the-top things to make their show the best of the night. This year’s honors go to Weezer, who made big waves after bringing Gossip Girl meanie Leighton Meester on stage to sing along with the band’s new single “(If You’re Wondering if I Want You To) I Want You To.”YouTube Preview Image (more…)

Jackson Biography Draws the Attention of Hollywood & Interweb

10/28/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Gossip, Music

picture-1232

In a triumphant posthumous return to the trending topics, Michael Jackson reared his beautifully-singing head on the social web when chatter about the release of his film biography reminded everyone just how influential his passing was. The new picture documents the life of the icon, along with (very) recent footage of Jackson prepping for his massive one-city stand in London (which this writer had tickets to, dammit).

In addition to several relevant celebrities, the premier of This Is It drew over 1.8 million online viewers which, at the price of $11 a move ticket (yeah, that’s what they cost now), translates to almost $20 million in revenues alone. It seems that the film will likely put a miniature dent in the debt left to Jackson’s family, and based on reviews, will give the public a chance to remember the pop icon in a positive light–Which is obviously the goal of Joe Jackson, the world’s first and only altruist.

New Collaboration Brings New Fang

10/26/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Music

We here at OneRiot love the idea of a good ‘collaboration’, and there’s no better incarnation of the c-word than a supergroup. Today, it came to our attention that there was such a group a-brewin’ when we noticed the massive realtime response to the term ‘New Fang‘. So we did what we do, and aimed our massive, cannon-like OneRiot trend-detector at this little bit of text and found that Them Crooked Vultures were in our midst, with Queens of the Stone Age and Led Zeppelin fans alike chattering over their new single.

Music Monday: Blog Edition #1

10/26/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Music

picture-3318

Halloween is just a few days away, but before we can get to the ghastly news leading up to everyone’s favorite heathen holiday, it’s time to spill the beans on this week’s music.

While it’s no surprise that Beyonce’s doing everything she can to stay relevant in her old age (read: 28), we here at OneRiot totally approve of her latest decision to cozy up with creepy crooner Lady Gaga. The pair shot a video for Knowles’ new track “Videophone” earlier this month, and now the ex-Destiny’s Child frontwoman is lending her pipes to Gaga’s upcoming single “Telephone.” What’s yet to be seen is how the comparably traditional Knowles will mix up with the decidedly nontraditional Madonna-phile Lady Gaga.

picture-3411In sad news, British music legend Morrissey was rushed to a Swindon hospital on Saturday night after collapsing during the performance of Smiths’ staple “This Charming Man.” Though sources say that the asexual icon is currently resting at home, surrounded by thousands of mirrors, we wish him a speedy recovery (and perhaps a late-afternoon slot at next year’s Coachella Festival). In sadder news, Bob Dylan released a Christmas album. (more…)

Chartjackers Take Aim at Social Web-Wide Collaboration

10/19/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Music

picture-932If artists in the 1980s laid the creative groundwork for charitable music collaborations, and the social web of the 2000s is the world’s first massive resource for crowd-sourced content, then isn’t it time we had a crossover single created for charity by people on the social web? Thank goodness for Chartjackers, because that’s what they’re all about.  The British internet celebrity foursome is bent on creating the world’s first million-songwriter collaboration using only the internet as its drawing board. And as it turns out, the plan is working—the #chartjackers topic has trended for a few days, and the BBC is producing a documentary about the band’s quest.

While we’re fully behind the Chartjackers’ mission, (anything charitable is pretty much fair game,) we’re still a little skeptical about whether the artists can match the pure emotion oozing out of Band-Aid’s timeless holiday single, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas.’ Watch the video here and you’ll see what we mean.YouTube Preview Image

Love Affair With a Bad Romance

10/19/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Music

Being Twittophiliac and understanding “what’s so great” about pop songs go hand in hand, evidenced by the massive response Lady Gaga’s new song ‘Bad Romance’ has garnered in the wacky world of status updates.  Just leaving your realtime search unrefreshed for a mere 30 seconds will have you missing countless intentionally grammatically incorrect words of praise for the 23 year old pop icon who’s new single just hit airwaves today after premiering at the Alexander McQueen runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

Garth Preps for Vegas Cowboy Comeback

10/15/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under Music

There are some people, that when you see their names trending, you assume them to be either freshly deceased, the subject of Internet death rumors, or newly accused of a heinous crime. Garth Brooks has been so safely stowed away from the limelight in recent years that his current nature as a trending topic had us fearing the worst, and teen twitter user @LouisaPaxton just generally wondering “Who is garth brooks?”picture-3317

Jay-Z Comes Back with What He Came with

9/04/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Gossip, Music

picture-3211

Remember when Abraham Lincoln said “Don’t call it a comeback?”

The great thing about retirement is that it has been redefined to mean “no longer working until realizing that a comeback is very, very profitable.” These days, the quality of your music doesn’t even matter anymore, only that you said you were going to stop and you didn’t - people love that. If you lie to them, they will come. And Jay-Z knows it. (more…)

Good or Bad, It’s Free Radiohead

8/17/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Music

picture-1034

Looks who’s trending! Of the bands I grew up loving, Radiohead is the only one whose commercial success has endured - but like any good music snob, I loved Radiohead less as they got bigger. A contribution to a major movie soundtrack here, a Bonnaroo headline there, and I was no longer proud to listen to them. It’s been two years since the last album I pretended not to care about - and now we get a song. (more…)

Comatose Toddler Brings it Back with Disco

5/27/09 - Posted by Jennifer Hodges under International Affairs, Music

Did you know that the earth-shattering music of ABBA is powerful enough to raise the dead? Ok - that’s an exaggeration - but the Swedish Pop group’s tunes can bring children out of a coma.

After suffering a severe case of meningitis and a heart attack, three-year-old Layla Towsey’s fate looked bleak. The English toddler soon fell into a coma and was put on life support. Her mother was even faced with the heart-wrenching task of kissing her daughter goodbye. However, this little dancing queen wasn’t ready to walk into the light. Five days after being completely unconscious, the little girl started emerging from her coma by humming and singing the “Mamma Mia” soundtrack, proving that God is totally into 70’s disco, and that the “tunnel of light” really is more like a lit-up dance floor.

The child had learned the songs after watching last summer’s sing-a-long blockbuster over and over again. Layla slowly regained full consciousness, and has since made a complete recovery. Now close your eyes, think of Divine Intervention, and enjoy the vision of Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep’s smiling faces. Amen.
