Happy Birthday to Us (It’s Fun to be 1!)

11/12/09 - Posted by Courtney Walsh under Life & Culture, OneRiot News

picture-3218 Today OneRiot officially turned one year old (or shall we say young?).

On Nov. 12, 2008, our realtime search engine burst onto the internets, and a year later we have a lot to celebrate. From getting bundled into IE8, to predicting American Idol winners, to distributing our search results to lots of partners, to launching the first ad network for the realtime web, to partnering with Taptu to release the first realtime search engine for mobile, it’s been quite a ride!

OneRiot Realtime Search Goes Mobile with Taptu

11/10/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under OneRiot News, Politics

Today OneRiot is excited to announce a partnership with Taptu, the leading mobile search engine. As of this morning, Taptu searchers will find realtime results within Taptu.com’s mobile-optimized search experience, signifying the first integration of realtime results by a mobile search provider.

Taptu is the first mobile company to make use of the OneRiot realtime search API, incorporating the web’s freshest, most buzzed about content into Taptu’s mobile touch-friendly interface. Mobile users can now search the realtime web or browse trending topics, fulfilling a need for people to discover realtime, socially-influenced content on the go – one of the most significant developments in mobile search to date. picture-280

We had lots of fun working with the Taptu team while bringing this alliance to life, picking up lots of fascinating things about mobile search in the process. It’s interesting territory – rapidly expanding, increasingly significant territory – and it’s more dependent on realtime information than anything before.

picture-935

Fun facts about mobile search:

+ The majority of mobile searches originate from smartphones, a market that represents 15% of the handheld market (and that grew by over 105% in 2008)

+ With the advent of the iPhone, mobile search has grown by 5x in frequency

+ Mobile search requires a different version of optimization than desktop search, supporting a different set of desires and expectations. According to behavioral research, mobile searchers expect to be entertained as well as informed, and want to discover web pages that are optimized for mobile (many of the websites indexed by traditional search engines are not).

+ A full 41% of cell phone owners (smart or otherwise) say they fill in free time when they are traveling or waiting for someone by making phone calls, and many of these owners do so using search

picture-935

These realities and more serve to confirm one of the most buzzed about revelations of the past few years: People are thinking of their mobiles as a portable computer, relying on their cell phones as a source of information, entertainment and sociability. But like we said, these on-the-fly information seekers are distinctly different than their desktop browsing counterparts. Sometimes, they’re searching for distinct pieces of information – for example, the phone number of a restaurant they’re hoping to make a reservation at – but frequently they have other goals in mind. Mobile search is more social, discovery-driven and experience sensitive than its predecessor - which is why its taken a new, specified engine like Taptu to make some sense of it all.

As we’ve chatted about before, realtime results help people find what’s happening, right now, for any subject. Not long ago, finding that fresh information required a steady perch at your desktop, but today that ‘nowness’ is in no way confined to a monitor. OneRiot believes that the mobile web is inherently suited for the fresh, buzzworthy events of the realtime web – in fact, it is frequently the very source of it - and we know that the future of mobile search is bright.

The Taptu/OneRiot partnership has brought a new level of accessibility to realtime search, allowing people on the go to find the news that matter most, right now. We know you’ll love the first result of our ongoing collaborations with Taptu, and we can’t wait to show you the rest in the coming weeks.

How To: Create a Killer “Soccer News” Dashboard with OneRiot

11/06/09 - Posted by Tobias Peggs under Life at OneRiot, OneRiot News, Sports

picture-1138 I was talking to a fellow Brit last night about a new soccer-related start up he’s building. Then I got to thinking… I’d love someone to build a “soccer news” dashboard from the realtime data that OneRiot delivers.

We’ve blogged before about the way OneRiot indexes and ranks. You can read more about it in our (mercifully short) white paper. Broadly speaking, our results reflect the current “pulse” on the web for any subject. We find “the good stuff” that people are buzzing about right now.

Specifically on that “soccer dashboard” idea, here are a few neat tricks you can employ to get the most out of our index and ranking algorithm.

You can do a “multiple domain search” on OneRiot, and add a key word. So, for example, here is a search to find the buzz on Manchester United from the British press.

We can then feed that information to you via RSS, like we’ve done here.

This means you can syndicate and/or present that information how you see fit.

OneRIot also has an API, so you could do server side integration and work with the XML or JSON that we return. This contains a rich set of “social metadata” (such as the ability to see which user shared a particular link on what service on the social web). Do an API call for every team, if you want (but maybe leave out Hull, because they will be relegated before you finish your project ;-)

Finally, you could take a stream of our results for a particular team and feed them into a Twitter account. Twitter followers would then see a stream of links to the buzziest content on the web for their favorite team. An easy way to do this is via Twitterfeed (we use this for our RiotFeeds). Here’s one I just made last week that tracks the buzziest stories from the British Press on Chelsea FC - @ChelseaFCBuzz - it’s killer content!

As a football-crazy Brit abroad, I’d love someone to build this. If you do, let me know - you’ll be my homepage in a heartbeat.

Tonight // Chic Meets Geek @ Automattic

11/05/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under Industry, OneRiot News

picture-642 Tonight, OneRiot is attending an event that we’re totally tickled over. Presented by Carol Tran in conjunction with the San Francisco Opera, the party will mesh the Bay Area’s tech community with a rather rare set of people in the computer world - those who know their shoe from their shoelace.

It’s called Chic Meets Geek, and it will attempt to connect the dots between high tech and high society amidst a blur of presentations, demos, mixed drinks and mingling. Among the words we shall apparently be able to utter in the same breath while in attendance: Stem Cells, Hackery, Mick Jagger, Android, Dallas Cowboys, MTV and Shark Tank. We’ll certainly be trying to squeeze as many of those in as possible during our OneRiot demo, so if you’ve a free night ahead of you, click on over this way to nab a ticket - we’d love to meet you there!

Where: Automattic, Pier 38
When: 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Event Website: http://ow.ly/wI5J

In attendance: Randi Zuckerberg, Facebook; Matt Mullenweg, Founder of Automattic & WordPress; Damon Dunn, Former NFL Football Player of the Dallas Cowboys; Mattin Noblia, Reality Star of Top Chef Las Vegas & Owner/Chef of Iluna Basque & more!

Zibb Business Search Goes Realtime

10/07/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under Industry, OneRiot News

picture-740Today Reed Business Information used OneRiot’s API to add realtime results to the search pages at Zibb.com, adding another layer of relevancy to their industry-specific search results.

Say, for example, I’m a Typographer, and I want to get a broad sense for the state of my industry as a whole. A traditional search engine would give me this (basically answering the question: what is typography?) but a search on Zibb will open several interesting windows. What’s the latest typography news? What are my competitors up to? What is my industry buzzing about today (cue OneRiot!).

10-7-2009-6-20-07-pm

The layer of information that realtime results are adding to this customized search environment is exciting, and we’re thrilled about this amazing use of our API. Congrats to Zibb on their successful launch - we can’t wait to see what Reed properties this lands on next!

Monetizing the Realtime Web

This week, we announced RiotWise - a way for publishers of quality content to reach users of realtime web applications, and a way for developers of those applications to monetize in a manner that also adds direct value to their users.

The response was very positive (thanks VentureBeat, thanks TechCrunch) and we’re excited to embark on this next phase of OneRiot’s growth.

sydneyrwf

We’ll be rolling out a pilot on OneRiot.com Search Results Pages in the coming days. This will help us experiment with various types of content, from a variety of sources, to help us optimize effectively before opening the door to partners in the coming weeks. The first implementation will appear on the “right-rail” of the page, and is titled “Featured Content.” It is “featured” (not “sponsored”) because we are choosing to feature links to a variety of relevant articles from across the web that will help us with our tests. This phase is a test campaign to monitor the user and content partner experience. No payment is changing hands during this test.

How does it work?

Based on OneRiot’s realtime search technology, the idea behind RiotWise is to match users to fresh, relevant content from our partners in realtime.

The service is grounded on the premise that users of realtime web apps are primarily trying to find out what’s going on right now for a particular topic. RiotWise serves up links to web pages from a content network that helps users find out what’s going right now. It directly matches the user’s intent - in other words, it adds value to the users’ experience; it helps them do what they are trying to do.

In lab testing, we’ve seen high Click Through Rates (CTRs) on RiotWise. Additionally, click throughs are highly qualified, and well targeted. The user clicking is trying to find out what’s going on right now for a particular topic, and they are being served links to content from quality publishers that exactly addresses that topic. This provides a great experience for the user, and a great audience for the content provider.

RiotWise is built from the ground up to be distributed across the realtime web. Any third party app will be able to grab a relevant content feed, serve it up to users in realtime, and get paid. Now remember, the content being served is fresh, high quality and relevant to the users. It’s totally in sync with the needs of the user of a realtime web app - which is great for distribution partners. They can now monetize by serving content that is useful to their users and adds value to their overall service. This is how to monetize on the realtime web.

If you have any questions about RiotWise, please feel free to comment on this blog, or email me, Tobias Peggs, directly (tobias@oneriot.com).

Moammar Ghadafi Meets East Coast’s Cold Shoulder

9/23/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under OneRiot News

picture-50 Leading a nation associated with supporting terrorism and giving a hero’s welcome to the convicted Lockerbie bomber hasn’t helped to alleviate any infamy associated with Moammar Ghadafi. So, it should come as no surprise that on his first trip to the States in 40 years, the longstanding Libyan ruler has more or less had the welcome mat yanked from under his feet. In town for the UN General Assembly, Ghadafi has had heaps of trouble finding a suitable station to rest his weary head. It seems not many towns want to host controversy and angry protests at their very doorstep. (more…)
