SXSW // Dining with Dino

3/05/10 - Posted by Courtney Walsh under Events, OneRiot News, OneRiot Partnerships

Dinosaurs are coming to Austin, and they’re ready for dinner.

OneRiot is teaming up with Taptu (the leading mobile search engine) and Loopt (a location-based social mapping service) at the SXSW Interactive Festival to bring a herd of hungry, prehistoric creatures to Austin, TX.  Using cellphones, geo-tagging and status updates, Dining with Dino will use the year’s most popular technological advances to bring SXSW attendees back to where it all began: with huge, flesh-eating reptiles.

On the days of March 14, 15 and 16th, thirty inflatable - though massively terrifying - dinosaurs will be abandoned at SXSW hot spots, wearing only a nametag and a set of directions.

#SXSWi conference attendees brave enough to interact with the beasts will unlock a world of dino-sized dinners, as their journey through panels, parties and downtown Austin leads T-Rex and friends to free meals at secret destinations. Just follow @OneRiot and @Taptu Twitter accounts to learn when and where to bring the dinos to score *free drinks and grub* for yourselves and a handful of friends.

OneRiot Offers “Track This Topic” Feature for Realtime Search

While you can always go to www.OneRiot.com to get fresh, dynamic, and relevant results for your query, there are some search terms that you may want continuous realtime follow up for perhaps weeks or longer.  To make this easy for you, OneRiot offers a “Track This Topic” feature that makes using realtime search even more convenient.

Let’s say, you are and have been a huge LOST fanatic.  You constantly scour the web for the latest spoiler alerts, behind the scene updates, and the answer to the million dollar question: What the hell is up with this island? This isn’t just a one-time-search kinda query–As each week and episode goes by, you want updated information.  Well with “Track This Topic” you can snag a live bookmark that constantly updates with the latest new from LOST.  Anytime you want to catch the latest Island buzz, it’s as simple as clicking your toolbar.

picture-1237

To set up your own OneRiot RSS bookmark, simply do a search for your query and press the orange “track this topic” button.  It will take you to another page, where all you have to do is “subscribe now.”  Presto.  You’re all set to go.  You can set up as many of these term-trackers as you want.  If Twitter is your thing, you can also snag the URL for the RSS page and link it to your Twitter account through sites like TwitterFeed.  (They give step-by-step instructions.)  Realtime results will automatically be updated to your account in 140 characters.  Snazzy, eh?

Twitter Firehose – Congrats to Twitter!

3/01/10 - Posted by Tobias Peggs under Industry, OneRiot News

A few moments ago, Twitter announced what the whole developer ecosystem has been waiting for: the “Firehose” is now being rolled out to partners. The “Firehose” is the realtime stream of tweets that pour out from Twitter on a daily basis – some 50 million per day!

A couple of weeks ago, we were one of the first developers to switch to the streaming API – and it makes a huge difference (as we wrote about here).

Of course, this official announcement from Twitter has caused a big splash today (deservedly so – it’s huge news!). Some of our own API partners have noticed that OneRiot isn’t in the list of “realtime search engines” mentioned by Twitter as partners. (Those mentioned are Ellerdale, Collecta, Kosmix, Scoopler, Twazzup, CrowdEye, and Chainn Search.) The simple reason is that those search engines’ results show you the actual tweets. Rather like Twitter’s own search engine, you search for “Michael Jackson” and you see tweets about “Michael Jackson”. OneRiot’s search engine instead uses activity on Twitter as a “signal” to help inform our web-wide search results.  (You can read more about the inner workings of our search engine here.) In other words we don’t show you the tweets. Our results link to the buzziest news, videos and images from across the web, influenced by what people are sharing on Twitter and other services. (*to be accurate, we actually show two tweets, but that’s for decoration.)

Given all that, our relationship with Twitter – while very tight – is a little different. So watch this space for our announcements soon.

In the mean time, congratulations to everyone on the Twitter API team, and to the partners announced today. It should bring a wave of innovation that everyone will be excited about.

OneRiot Continues to Monetize the Realtime Web with Release of New API

2/18/10 - Posted by Courtney Walsh under OneRiot News

Today we’re excited to announce significant upgrades to our Realtime Search API.  After opening it up to web developers back in June 2009, it has powered hundreds of millions of searches for a growing number of partners, including social messaging apps, browsers, mobile apps, large consumer websites and other search engines.  Now we’re making it easy for developers to serve realtime search results and get paid at the same time with OneRiot’s API 2.0.

Our API 2.0 offers developers a wide range of updates, including:

  • RiotWise Ads - Any developer using the OneRiot search API will now also receive RiotWise ads for the realtime web. These are relevant to the search results returned by the API. Developers can choose to display them (and get paid) or not. Use of the API is free.
  • Domain search - This enables realtime search across a specific website or network. The Guardian was the first partner to experiment with this new functionality, launching their new “Zeitgeist” tool earlier this month.
  • Vertical search - Developers can choose to receive realtime results for specific verticals such as news, videos, and images.
  • Niche search - A range of niche verticals are also available, such as gadgets, politics and music.
  • Tweet format - Developers can now receive search results and ads formatted like a tweet – 140 characters, including a bit.ly shortened URL. This is ideal for developers of Twitter and mobile applications working with limited real estate.

All of these changes and relevant documentation for API 2.0 can be found on the OneRiot Developer Network, which itself has just received an upgrade.

We’ve been delighted, and amazed, at the innovation shown by the developer community embracing the OneRiot API. I’m sure these updates will spark even more creativity. At the same time, we’re excited to be rolling out the RiotWise ad network to more developers.

Guardian Introduces “Zeitgeist” Powered by OneRiot

2/05/10 - Posted by Courtney Walsh under OneRiot News, OneRiot Partnerships

The beauty of the realtime web is that it’s always evolving, constantly paving the way for exciting new tools and resources to be developed.  The Guardian is one of the latest to harness the power of social signals and realtime web by launching Zeitgeist, an eye-catching visual record of what stories people are currently engaging with across the Guardian.co.uk network at any moment. By leveraging OneRiot’s API, utilizing our realtime data, and benefiting from our realtime ranking algorithm PulseRank, the Guardian is able to deliver a colorful and enticing visual that updates with the buzziest stories from across its network.  Zeitgeist is great tool for content discovery.  It not only filters and ranks the best information, but also offers a user-friendly window into the “zeitgeist” of the publication (not to mention driving plenty of page views).

screen-shot-2010-02-05-at-31948-pm

You can learn more about the “Zeitgeist” by heading over to their in-depth blog post.  You can also track developments and provide feedback via Twitter. A huge congrats to Meg Pickard , Head of Social Media Development, Dan Catt and the rest of the Guardian social media team who have been working on the project.  And as always, we encourage and invite you to use our API to deliver fresh and exceptional ways to consume media. We’re excited to see what you come up with.

VideoSurf Boosts OneRiot’s Realtime Video Search

2/03/10 - Posted by Courtney Walsh under OneRiot News, OneRiot Partnerships

Today, OneRiot’s realtime video search results just got a boost from the folks over at VideoSurf- a killer video search engine unlike any you’ve seen before.

By simply downloading their updated Firefox Add-On or Google Chrome Extension, our realtime video results will now be enhanced with VideoSurf’s powerful video search technology including a unique visual summary.   Web surfers will not only be able to find the most socially relevant and current videos (powered by OneRiot’s PulseRank technology), but  will also get distinct insight into the actual video content within the search results page on OneRiot.com.  Also, VideoSurf inserts its most relevant results for the same query on the right rail to give users more bang for their search.

oneriot_videosurf_lost

Most video search engines are blind to video content, relying solely only on headlines, tags and other text – not but not these guys!  VideoSurf’s Computer Vision Field technology allows them to see inside the video to determine what kind of content it holds. Likewise, OneRiot determines the relevancy of online videos by how many times the video link is shared on the social web across sites like Twitter, Digg, MySpace and others.  The combination of these two smart search technologies is a perfect match for video web fanatics to quickly and easily find exactly what they are looking for in the wide world of online videos!

Monetize Your iPad App with RiotWise

1/29/10 - Posted by Tobias Peggs under OneRiot News

screen-shot-2010-01-29-at-21338-pm1

The iPad quite rightly caused quite a stir this week. Now, following its big unveiling, there will be a rush of application developers building apps to take advantage of its awesomeness. But how to monetize those applications? Here’s the answer: RiotWise.

Last week we announced the general availability of the first ad network for the realtime web, RiotWise. Now all developers working in the realtime web space can monetize their apps, including mobile apps, desktop clients, social search engines, and now of course,  iPad apps.  We expect Apple’s newest creation to really fuel growth in the realtime web.  As more people have continuous and immediate online access, usage patterns will move towards a desire to consume the latest, hottest, “realtime” content, all the time.  Riotwise ads directly match that intent - which is good news for the user, the app developer, and of course the advertiser.

To recap some key points:

  • RiotWise ads are contextually relevant in realtime, resulting in high Click Through Rates (CTR). Advertisers include a range of publishers such as entertainment sites, sports networks, and news organizations. Dynamically created ads link to quality content from these publishers that relates directly to a users’ realtime search term or a global trending topic.
  • RiotWise ads have been performing at 3-4 times industry standard CTR for ads in realtime web apps, delivering significant revenue to developers.
  • Developers have flexibility to display RiotWise ads in a manner that best suits users of their particular application. For example, partners such as Digsby (the wildly popular social messaging client) and ÜberTwitter (the #1 Twitter Client for BlackBerry) are showing ads directly in the realtime stream. Other implementations include more traditional mobile banner placements or the familiar AdSense-style text block.  Just imagine how stunning your ad will look on a sleek 9.7 inch touch screen.
  • OneRiot shares advertiser revenue with developers.
  • All developers interested in monetizing their applications with RiotWise should email riotwise@oneriot.com. More information and RiotWise API documentation can be found on the OneRiot Developer Network.

We’re looking forward to seeing what you can do!
