OneRiot in the News // Wired Magazine & USA Today

Two publications we admire gave OneRiot some lip service today, and while we rarely brag on on press mentions in the blog, the articles we were lucky enough to land in this morning are so well written and thought provoking, we had to share.

USAToday: Realtime Web Keeps Social Networkers Connected

picture-481In this article, reporter Jon Swartz analyzes a new breed of media consumers, drawing parallels between social media, realtime information consumption, and the hyper-connectivity that’s propelling it all. Our own Tobias Peggs even throws in a word or two…

Introducing The OneRiot Developer Network

9/23/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under OneRiot News

picture-394

Today OneRiot launched OneRiot Developer Network, a new website built specifically for the OneRiot API partner community.

OneRiot Developer Network will serve as a place for third party developer to get started with our popular API, ask questions, connect with the OneRiot API team, and engage with their fellow developers. It will also be a great place to check out the many ways our current partners have integrated realtime information into their sites, social applications, search engines, and data visualizations.

At the helm of ORDN is Robert Reich, co-founder of OneRiot and founder of Add-On-Con, the first and only conference dedicated to browser add-on developers. Robert speaks for everyone at OneRiot when he says the goal of ORDN is to provide developers with the tools, help and guidance they need for creative and successful implementations of the OneRiot realtime search API, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store (the last time Robert stepped in to lead a community, it became the third largest Meetup in the country - so our developers are in good hands).

Alongside OneRiot Developer Network, we’re excited to announce a six great new additions to the OneRiot search partner program. All of these players used the OneRiot API to add some killer features to their sites, apps or search engines - check them out!

Horrorcore Rapper Alleged Virginia Slayings Murderer

9/21/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under OneRiot News

picture-2612 We’ve never been accused of homicide, but we imagine that the most difficult part of receiving a fair hearing on such charges is the fact that the word “murderer” - even with the word “alleged” in front of it - carries a pretty negative stigma akin to strike one. While strikes two and three are usually reserved for damning evidence and a subsequent judicial ruling, one potential inmate may have handed over all of the proof beyond a reasonable doubt with his choice of artistic expression and knack for catchy pseudonyms. Such is the case of Syko Sam, a 20-year-old, California-based Horrorcore rapper, who has been accused of murdering a Virginia Pastor and three others at a Longwood University professor’s home 50 miles outside of Richmond. Today The Huffington Post, the most popular blog in the world, launched a special Denver edition: All Things Colorado. Colorado is cow town no longer, as Denver joined the ranks alongside Huff Post’s only other outposts - New York and Chicago.

To top it off, the editors at Huff post invited our very own CEO, Kimbal Musk, to be an inaugural blogger, resulting in a post that you can check out here. Covering Kimbal’s journey thru tech, to Boulder, to the kitchen of an award-winning restaurant, and back to tech, this post might convince you that Colorado takes Silicon Valley to school when it comes to starting a business and raising a family.

Welcome to Colorado, Huffington Post - we’re thrilled to have you.

picture-1429OneRiot tee-shirts are smokin’ hot - and they’ve been going fast, real fast. Realtime enthusiasts, predominately male, have been snatching them up, not only because they make you look like a total babe, but because geek is chic–and nothing is nerdier than a search engine.

While we’re aware that the techie/computer/web space is a little XY-dominated, there’s no reason why the ladies should be missing out on this bot couture. For this specific reason, we made sure to order plenty of American Apparel women’s T’s, just so they could show off their girlish figures and rock OneRiot at the same time. Long story short - while we’re pretty much out of dude sizes, we’ve got plenty of lovely ladies shirts, and we’re giving them away to you for free.

Interested parties should send an email to Jhodges@oneriot.com, using “OneRiot Shirt” in the subject header. We’ll get one out to you ASAP, and - if we really like you - we may even throw in a sticker or two.

API Partners Drive OneRiot to Search Milestone

9/09/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under Industry, OneRiot News

oneriot-growth

OneRiot recently passed a landmark - one million search queries per day!

This was made largely possible by over 40 successful implementations of the OneRiot API,picture-929 and is a milestone for us for several reasons, perhaps the most important of which was pointed out by TechCrunch’s Erick Schonfeld: Search is a volume game, where the more search queries you can process, the better your results become.

Erick’s right: The more searches we serve, the easier it is to tune our results to what our searchers really want. No matter where your user numbers sit, search improvements are a neverending pursuit, but in the early stages that user input is all the more imperative.

That said, we owe a huge thank you to desktop apps like Yoono, sharing tools like Shareaholic, companies like Microsoft, search engines like Scour, and thirty-something other services for embracing our API to add value their sites and user experiences - you rock.

TechCrunch blogged our milestone - check it out!

‘Controversial’ Obama Speech Teaches Lesson

9/08/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under OneRiot News

picture-544

Red-blooded Americans pregnant with apprehension over what Barack Obama had to say to their kids received zero fuel for their conspiracy theories after the president’s speech today amounted to little more than the usual pep talk. Nevertheless, those that spent the last eight years calling themselves patriots and labeling their former president’s critics as traitors seemed to have no problem finding a sinister undertone in the forthright monologue of our current leader. Weird Stuff <3’s Texas: Bloodsucking ‘Thing’ Edition

9/04/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under OneRiot News

picture-3112 Since the advent of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Lone Star State has been a hotbed for the paranormal, the macabre, and the generally creepy. And while the legend of Leatherface has been all but put to rest by the motion picture industry, light is being shed on a different story: that of the chupacabra.

A mythical beast that sucks the blood of its prey like a doggy Dracula has been ‘discovered’ in multiple locations along the Mexican border in recent days. Two years ago, huntress Phylis Canion found a couple supposed chupacabras on the side of the road and, after extensive DNA testing (results withheld), mounted one on her wall. Because that’s normal. You Can Take ‘Beating Up Your Girlfriend’ Out of Style, But You Can’t Take the Style Out of Brown

9/03/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under OneRiot News

No matter how nicely you’re dressed, you can still be a d-bag.

picture-2014Doling out the same ol’ incoherent justifications for heinously beating your now ex-girlfriend’s face to a bloody pulp can only take you so far in your attempt to win back the public’s favor, but don a snazzy bowtie and they’re yours forever.  While Chris Brown’s appearance on Larry King Live didn’t lead to a mass forgiveness ceremony on par with being crowned as the Exonerated King of Pop Jr., the CNN viewers did seem oddly captivated by CB’s accessory du jour,  with the bright baby blue bow protruding from Brown’s neck stirring up quite the Twitstorm. #Chrisbrownsbowtie became a popular hashtag as tweeters put it on par with Chuck Norris and proclaimed that it had surpassed said pop star in popularity.  More importantly, it spoke to the truism that no matter how nicely you’re dressed, you can still be a d-bag.

OneRiot Announces $7 Million Funding
Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Appian Ventures and Spark Capital invest in OneRiot Realtime Web Search

oneriottwitter Boulder, Colo./ San Francisco (August 27, 2009) – OneRiot, the realtime search engine, today announced that it has secured $7 million in Series C funding led by Appian Ventures, Commonwealth Capital Ventures, and Spark Capital, the company’s existing venture capital firms.

OneRiot delivers realtime web search results to millions of users, both at OneRiot.com and to 3rd parties who utilize OneRiot’s Search API. The company will use proceeds of this funding to further enhance its core search product and to support its fast-growing partner network.

“This commitment from our existing investors is a big vote of confidence in the realtime search market, OneRiot’s product offering, and our team’s ability to execute,” said Kimbal Musk, OneRiot’s CEO.

OneRiot’s partners include Yahoo and Microsoft, who recently released a version of Internet Explorer bundled with OneRiot realtime search.

OneRiot launched in November 2008. It helps users find the news, stories and videos that are most relevant to people right now. Search results are ordered using OneRiot’s PulseRank algorithm – a PageRank for the realtime web. PulseRank reflects the current social buzz associated with any content on the web. OneRiot indexes web pages that are shared in realtime by users on social services such as Twitter and Digg. In addition OneRiot manages its own panel of 3 million users who have opted in to share realtime information with the service.

“Increasingly, the web’s most relevant content is what our friends and other people are talking about, sharing and looking at right now,” said Musk. “Using OneRiot people can find that content in realtime.”
