In yet another example of the wonders of our oceans, a bottle tossed out to sea with a message tucked inside it washed up years later somewhere else. In this case, the (beer) bottle was thrown by a group of firefighters on a fishing trip, miles off the Jersey shore, in the summer of 1969. This past month - 39 years later - it was found on a beach in Corolla, North Carolina, over 400 miles from where it started.
The people who discovered the bottle - Mark Ciarmello and his 3-year-old daughter - contacted the fire department from the address on the message. Presumably, the reunion was fun for everyone involved, though privately, the retired firefighters regretted they didn’t do something cooler with their golden opportunity… like draw a naked girl on it or something.
“Man, we were so drunk, I’m surprised we could write anything at all!” said (we surmise) one unidentified New Jersey fireman.
