An army of angry Tweeps carrying torches and pitchforks have swarmed the internet, protesting plans to create a Twitter-based reality show (or just Twitter-utilizing; conflicting stories make it tough to tell). Emerging on memorial day, rumors flew that Reveille and Brillstein Entertainment (The Office, Biggest Loser, The Sopranos), were moving forward with an unscripted competition in which players would use Twitter while “trailing” celebrities. (Pure speculation leads us to believe that it would be called, “Stalk to Ya Later” or “American Twidol”)
Twitter’s official blog immediately put up a statement to try to quell rumors, but instead only sent people into more of a hysteric 140 character hissy-fit of skepticism when they released:
“…Regarding the Reveille and Brillstein project reported today, we have a lightweight, non-exclusive, agreement with the producers which helps them move forward more freely…”
Only to be followed by the following statement the very next day:
“Twitter is not making a television show. Some Hollywood folks are developing something that leverages Twitter and they are extremely enthusiastic as evidenced by all the media hubbub yesterday and today…”
Whether the show has legitimate plans or not, die hard enthusiasts of the micro blogging site are concerned that Twitter’s integrity will be lost if they decide to “sell out.” However, we’re trying to look on the bright side, as “Two million followers” boaster and lame-ass extraordinaire Ashton Kutcher has threatened to leave the site if a Twitter show goes through. That alone is enough reason to have us tuning in at 8:00 pm with some popcorn and a giant smile. Take that, Kutcher - You just got Twunked.
