Being 11 years old is awesome. You don’t have to work in the summer, you get to eat whatever you want without getting fat, and you’re forced to hang out under the sun for an hour after lunch.
Unless, of course, you’re Moshe Kai Cavalin, the 11-year-old college graduate and decorated martial arts competitor who walked off the East Los Angeles Community College campus diploma-in-hand this week. The pre-tween, though still wide eyed and bushy tailed after a rigorous astrophysics courseload, plans to use his brilliance for good; but not before he learns to scuba dive, write a self-help book for kids trying to get through school, and win a few more kung fu championships.

When this story popped up on the realtime news feed it seemed like a good idea to blog it. Now, excitement and ambition have given way to a simple, damning question: is it overwhelmingly probable that this rugrat could both out-math us AND kick our ass?

I actually feel sorry for this ‘dumbass’, not because he finished college at the age of nine. He practically screwed up his whole childhood. Good luck finding a job… And why get into a college? Ever heard of a university???
we feel inferior…. we feel amused
Well you know what people like to say. “You either get it or you don’t.” Maybe this kid proves it. Or maybe it’s what he says, and no school system on our planet is working.
What does being able to do astrophysics mean, anyway? Is that a practical skill?
Wow, people are being hard on this kid. He’s just a kid. He was probably just doing what his parents told him to do both before and after they told him he wasn’t working hard enough and they wouldn’t be proud of him until he knew 6 languages instead of three.
“He practically screwed up his whole childhood.” - Your perspective has little argument considering you did not provide any evidence . . . besides “getting a job” ?
He has ample time to do that.
“what does… astrophysics…anyway?” -> http://www.wikipedia.org, please allow yourself to become less ignorant like this person has done for himself, don’t ask questions unless you cannot easily seek the answer on your own.
I wish … we could all be like this. Humanity would be better off even if we didn’t “enjoy” ourselves… we could after we defeat diseases, pain, and death - even if that’s not what some want.
Kjo,
Sounds like an 11 year old with an Associates Degree.
For some who do not understand gifted children, they don’t have interest that most kids do their age…’why don’t they play like kids…i feel sorry for him…etc…’ are all ignorant comments. His childhood is just what he is doing, and what he finds fun and interesting. You may find running around playing tag, not wanting to do your homework, practice piano, etc…fun, as a child, but this child may not. As mentioned, his parents do NOT push, him. This child finds all this (astrophysics, etc…) fun, and enjoyable…just like some children finds playing video games all day enjoyable and fun.
I don’t know. My parents really pushed me into the world of physics. I knew everything about it, but I got so burnt out by the time I was ten, that I ultimately had a falling out with my mom and dad and dropped the last name Hawking altogether.
Stephen, im glad your mature enough to call an 11 year old a dumbass, he has given more to the world than you ever will
i think everyone should leave this little boy alone your just fucking mad cause he’s 11 and has already finished college half of fucking America is stupid anyhow i dont get why people have 2 be so ignorant
Meant to say Stephen, apologies to Kjo
Hahahaahaha, He is such a great kid! I seriously would love to meet him, and have a chat about what he’s been threw.
I personally think, he didn’t ‘lose’ his childhood, THIS IS HIS CHILDHOOD. He did mention that he liked school, and karate, and piano. Those are his hobbies as a kid, and maybe when he’s a grown adult, his hobbies will be ‘GETTING RID OF CANCER’. Who knows.
This kid is amazing.
