Since the beginning of ‘verbing’ words, many classic nouns and adjectives have taken the weirding of our language a step further. The most recently impactful verbed word is ‘trending,’ something that’s been awesome-ing here at OneRiot since our inception. Every once in a while, the very trend that’s occurring will stem from the question “Why is X trending?,” adding a little caveat to the whole trending thing altogether. Today, an old and currently irrelevant animated film that we have no reason to revisit, popular-ed at high enough numbers to be trending. Why? Well, Bebe’s Kids just happened to be on BET today.
The film, based on a Robin Harris stand up routine about babysitting a few brats at an amusement park, was not completely irrelevant when it came out. In fact, it was the first major feature length animation with an all black cast, which included Tone-Loc, of ‘Funky Cold Medina’ fame, although the infamous date rape drug is not discussed in the film. Since its release in 1992, Bebe’s Kids has been credited with trivializing destructive behavior in urban youths and popularizing Yo Mama jokes. Current impact? None. Just a little reminder that people are, in fact, idiots; even the one’s who call everyone idiots. I just Netflixed Bebe’s Kids.
