If you were planning on committing serious crimes in China but were previously deterred by the possibility of capital punishment, you might consider blowing the dust off that notebook of black market contacts. China is planning on reducing its numbers of death penalties.
A top official asserted that “it is impossible for the country to abolish capital punishment under current realities and social security conditions”, clearly referring to the recent spat of chopstick-in-eye accidents that have led to death sentences for those found guilty of misusing the traditional eating utensils.
While no one expects total abolition of capital punishment in China, those who have already been sentenced can breathe a sigh of relief in light of the chance that, with a granted appeal, they may merely spend the rest of their lives in the horror show that is China’s prison system.
