Looks who’s trending! Of the bands I grew up loving, Radiohead is the only one whose commercial success has endured - but like any good music snob, I loved Radiohead less as they got bigger. A contribution to a major movie soundtrack here, a Bonnaroo headline there, and I was no longer proud to listen to them. It’s been two years since the last album I pretended not to care about - and now we get a song.
I’ll try my best to leave the snobbery at the door when judging this track. I’m a critic and it’s my duty to be objective. The band is reportedly “pretty proud” of ‘These Are My Twisted Words’ and have put this gift to fans on their website for free. As with most free things (excluding In Rainbows which was free and pretty damn solid), there’s a catch here. The catch; this song kiiiinda sucks. OK, that’s a harsh and sweeping judgement. But seriously. Listening to it objectively might mean ignoring the snob factor, but it also means not loving it just because it’s Radiohead.
Alright, I’m a huge jerk. Like I said, a snob. Really though, just listen to it. It’s… not that great. It’s got a repetitive quality, and though it has that Radiohead style where the repetitive rhythm is coupled with a long phrased melody, it’s not as haunting or as interesting as their signature songs. It’s different, but it just sounds lazy. It sounds like it lacks effort. It sucks. Oh hell, you ldownlad it and judge for yourself.
