Although America at large has been slow to accept gay marriage, the gay community seems to be carrying on with the business of official couplehood without much notice of legislation that doesn’t favor their lifestyle. The census shows that almost 150,000 same sex couples reported being married despite their particular brand of marriage being illegal in their states.
Whether orchestrated or not, this action serves as a peaceful protest for marriage rights and reflects that the true nature of a married union might not even be something that needs to be made proper by the state. Of course, these couples still don’t get the full list of benefits guaranteed to those who are married in the traditional sense, but as some say, as long as people are living and loving together, they’re married and should be treated as such. A public uncomfortable with that still wont stop it.
And so, the fight continues. The gay community continues seeking state recognition of same sex marriage and an effective chunk of the public is still totally grossed out by dudes making out with dudes. People won’t be used to it until it’s common, and until it’s common, people won’t be used it.
