Remember when Abraham Lincoln said “Don’t call it a comeback?”
The great thing about retirement is that it has been redefined to mean “no longer working until realizing that a comeback is very, very profitable.” These days, the quality of your music doesn’t even matter anymore, only that you said you were going to stop and you didn’t - people love that. If you lie to them, they will come. And Jay-Z knows it.
So what can we expect from Blueprint 3? In fact, the NAACP would be proud. Jay-Z has turned in his guns and jewelry to put forth a record speaking directly to the urban youths of America. The message is clear and simple: respect yourselves, your parents, and those around you no matter their race or gender, and don’t be materialistic. It’s about time a black icon took responsibility for his influence and saw that kids look up to him, finally deciding to be a better role model. Or, at least, it would be about time. No, dear reader, this is not the revival of hip hop because I made all that up. We can expect the same money grubbing, pugnacious rhetoric, and mysogyny from this Jay Z record, just like every other one.
You know who does have an album like the one described? Bill Cosby. Maybe he’ll sell more records and merch than Jay Z. Then again, Bill’s clothing line doesn’t exactly hit the target audience.
