We often view the use of new technology as a privilege. Hell, we still say having a driver’s license is a privilege in a country where functioning without a car is practically impossible outside of a city. However, one country is taking the first step in recognizing that we live in an age of dependence on technology, not simply a time of increased ease. Today, Finland makes broadband a legal right, and the approximate 20 resulting Tweets per minute suggest that it’s a damn good idea.


While lots of the buzz about Finland today surrounds a World Cup qualifier against Germany in a sport that we have deciphered as something called ‘Soocker’, most utterances of the Nordic nation have to do with this groundbreaking legislation set to take effect July 2010. But don’t expect us in the US of A to jump all over such policy any time soon, or at all. The government providing a necessary service in a way that all citizens benefit: this is the kind of thing our loudest citizens refer to as ’socialism’.
