Is it just us or does the regular world seem to stop for the wide world of sports every weekend? That was a rhetorical question. It’s not just us. The entire world does pause so pigskins can be tossed, fastballs can be launched into the upper deck, and speeding vehicles can repeatedly circle around tracks for hours at a time in anticipation of capturing a checkered flag. It’s just the natural order of work giving way to leisure as soon as Friday comes around. This weekend was really no different as several huge sports stories overwhelmed the social web.
The Hawkeyes of Iowa continued to clog up the BCS Bowl picture by remaining undefeated thanks to a splendid 2nd half comeback engineered by QB Ricky Stanzi. However, Stanzi was not the biggest QB to make a dent on users of the realtime web. Brett Favre proved to Packers fans that he could still sling the football as he returned to Lambeau Field for revenge against the Green Bay Pack attack. CBS had a handle on the importance of this event and they oversold it by instituting the Brett Favre cam, which apparently showed everything Brett did all day prior to and during the game against his former mates, bringing new definition to realtime web. We tuned out during the bathroom breaks but the cam-page has garnered a lot of shares by social web users even still today. We hope no one is following us that closely when we turn 40 and are overly-glorified bloggers who no doubt will warrant our every move being broadcast to the farthest reaches of the broadband universe.
Not to take anything away from the glory of Favre, but The World Series was in full swing as well. And wouldn’t you know it the New York Yankees made the Phillies look like “My Little Ponies” bringing the defending champs to the brink of elimination with wins on Saturday and Sunday at Citizen’s Bank Park. While Phillies fans seem optimistic and haven’t let their displeasure over the imminent doom of their brotherly baseball bashers be known, it seems the folks at Macy’s didn’t get the memo either. They saw fit to put out an ad in Monday’s paper congratulating NL pennant winners on taking their 2nd straight World Series Championship. Looks like someone wasn’t watching the game or at least monitoring it via yahoo’s live gamechannel feature. At the very least they could’ve listened to MLB.Com’s audio feed of the live action.
Speaking of the brink of elimination, NASCAR’s Ryan Newman was lucky to not have his breathing functions completely eliminated as he enjoyed quite the dustup at Talladega on Sunday. His crash immediately became fodder for the realtime web as the fortunate driver of the US Army Chevrolet Impala emerged unscathed after a rather scary collision that resulted in some automobile gymnastics and a very displeased racer who did not shy away from offering his criticism once the debris settled.
While this weekend was certainly full of much athletic ado, this week promises a good deal of hullaballoo. For one, the Yankees and Phillies will take to the baseball diamond for what could be the last hardball game of the season. We might even see a ticker tape parade hit Manhattan. Either that or there’ll be a grand ol’ comeback for Ryan Howard and company to go along with the full slate of NBA and NHL action which always brings its fair share of fantastic dunks and unbelievable icebound trickery. We can’t wait.
