Holy Mammoth! Scientists Hit the Motherload

2/19/09 - Posted by Jennifer Hodges under Hot Topics

Scientists have hit it big after discovering the fossil motherload near the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, the main celebrity being an almost fully complete Colombian Mammoth named Zed.

Dead Zed and his 10 foot long tusks were found along with the remains of sloths, saber-toothed cats, wolves, and other mammals who roamed the LA area between 10,000-40,000 years ago. The extinct fellas became stuck to hot asphalt that oozed up through cracks and fissures in the ground, making them immobile and eventually sending them to a tar-like grave (a rather sucky and uncomfortable way to go).

The remains were discovered underneath an old parking close to the tar pits. Researchers dubbed the excavation Project 23 due to the 23 full boxes it took for them to house their findings. This “Paleontological Christmas” as it has been referred, is said to be the first significant fossil excavation in over a century.

Because Zed was nearly 80% accounted for, researchers were able to learn a lot about his hairy and tragic life. Z-Dawg had arthritic joints, re-healed ribs, and multiple broken bones, proving once and for all that LA life is not nearly as glamorous as people make it out to be.

World’s Oldest Pot Stash Found in China

12/04/08 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Hot Topics

Researchers have found a stash of marijuana in Xinjiang, China that seems to be the oldest ever discovered. The antique contraband, weighing in at 789 grams, was found in a leather basket inside the 27000-year-old tomb of a man believed to be someone’s sketchy cousin. Also found alongside the corpse were a handheld scale and dozens of smaller leather baskets.

According to the report, the estimated high THC content in an analyzed sample provides the oldest evidence that marijauna was cultivated for its psychoactive qualities and not for making rope or loose fitting clothes. The report’s lead author, Dr. Ethan B. Russo, is a full-time consultant with GW Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Sativex, a marijuana derivative medication used to treat cancer, multiple schlerosis, and symptoms of suburban life.

Despite how it looks, it is believed that the man was a shaman who was supposed to use the marijuana during a journey to the afterlife, which tends to be a rather long excursion without much impressive scenery. Other items the man was buried with included archery equipment, a harp, and a few Creedance tapes.

Family is Forever

While Sly may have made The Family Stone a household name thanks to some dynamite funk music way back in the 1970’s, he certainly didn’t invent the concept of family. As it turns out, sharing intimate moments with your closest relatives and saddling them with unnecessary emotional baggage is older than Stonehenge.

Scientists in Central Germany recently uncovered a grave containing bones from four individuals that DNA tests revealed were that of a mother, father and their two children. This find is a remarkable one in that, according to Wolfgang Haak of the University of Adelaide Australia, the genetic link between the study subjects provides scientists with their earliest evidence of the existence of the nuclear family structure in the Central European region. Unfortunately, it’s also the earliest evidence of a Central European family being brutally attacked, as several telling signs on their skeletal remnants pointed to being the victims of outside violence.

The astonishing find was most likely met by disappointment from the likes of Pauly Shore and Sean Astin who were hoping the Stone Age clan was impacted in ice and could be thawed out in time to revive their careers with an “Encino Man” sequel entitled “Encino Family”.
