If the office feels a bit quieter Wednesday (see also: a bit more poorly dressed, a bit less revolutionary), you may be feeling the effects of “Calling in Gay” day, a new rebellion to California’s depressing rollback of gay marriage rights via Proposition 8.
The officially titled “Day Without a Gay,” masterminded by L.A. couple Sean Hetherington and Aaron Hartzler, functions just like like calling in sick does, but instead of telling your office manager that you’re out with the flu you say, “Sorry, I won’t be making it in today because- oh man - I am just really, really gay.” In this way, people living all over the US plan on skipping out on work, cutting back on spending, and showing those gay rights de-activists just what a day without the gay community really looks like.
Thankfully, due to the forward-thinking nature of the participating parties, considerations have been made as to what a day like this could mean to the current economy- and while proving the spending power of the nation’s GLBTs is a point that will likely still be made, efforts are underway to counteract those economic subtractions with the addition of plenty of volunteer and community improvement hours.
