Weekend Sports Roundup

11/03/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under Sports

Is it just us or does the regular world seem to stop for the wide world of sports every weekend?  That was a rhetorical question.  It’s not just us.  The entire world does pause so pigskins can be tossed, fastballs can be launched into the upper deck, and speeding vehicles can repeatedly circle around tracks for hours at a time in anticipation of capturing a checkered flag.  It’s just the natural order of work giving way to leisure as soon as Friday comes around.  This weekend was really no different as several huge sports stories overwhelmed the social web.

picture-4211The Hawkeyes of Iowa continued to clog up the BCS Bowl picture by remaining undefeated thanks to a splendid 2nd half comeback engineered by QB Ricky Stanzi.  However, Stanzi was not the biggest QB to make a dent on users of the realtime web.  Brett Favre proved to Packers fans that he could still sling the football as he returned to Lambeau Field for revenge against the Green Bay Pack attack.  CBS had a handle on the importance of this event and they oversold it by instituting the Brett Favre cam, which apparently showed everything Brett did all day prior to and during the game against his former mates, bringing new definition to realtime web.  We tuned out during the bathroom breaks but the cam-page has garnered a lot of shares by social web users even still today.  We hope no one is following us that closely when we turn 40 and are overly-glorified bloggers who no doubt will warrant our every move being broadcast to the farthest reaches of the broadband universe. Match it Up: Realtime Web & Realtime Search

5/27/09 - Posted by Tobias Peggs under Featured

At OneRiot we deliver socially relevant search results, fast. The stuff that people are buzzing about, right now; the news they want to find, right this second. This is the realtime web, and in order for a search engine to accurately reflect that web, its results must be as informative as they are reflective of the terms most current meaning.

For example, if you searched for “Champions League Final” on OneRiot this morning, you probably found previews of the game, tactics and team sheets. But if you search for “Champions League Final” this afternoon you’ll find post-match analysis, videos of the goals, and interviews with key players.

Same search query, different time - and results that change to reflect what people are buzzing about right now.

Traditional search engines struggle to surface these fresh, socially relevant search results. They index the web based on factors like links between webpages, which take time to build up. As a consequence, their search results tend to surface highly referenced resources like Wikipedia pages or official websites. Dependable stuff, but not necessarily reflective of what people are buzzing about right now.

OneRiot indexes the web in an entirely new way – by harnessing the power of the realtime social web. When people share a link on Twitter, Digg or other social sharing services, they are signaling that it is of interest to them right now. OneRiot takes that as a signal to index a particular page on the web. We also look at other “social signals” like the number of retweets or comments that a link has generated, and add some special measures such as “velocity” (is the link “hotter” right now than it was 2 mins ago, etc). All of these combine (with others) to help us create a realtime socially relevant index of the web. The end result is a search experience that allows users to find new, fresh, relevant search results – reflecting what people are buzzing about right now.

Of course, when people start buzzing about different things, our search results change to keep up with shifting interests. Here’s a pro tip: our search results pages let you know when new, fresher, more relevant results emerge. If you search for “Champions League Final” and keep the tab open all day, you can track the top results as they shift from match previews to post-match analysis. Try it. We’d love to know what you think.

Favre: He’s Baaaack (Agaaaain)

5/18/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under OneRiot News

The man with the world’s most diluting ego, Brett Favre, has announced that he will indeed return from retirement for a third time. This year, the story goes like this: Favre’s doctor has advised him to get reconstructive orthopedic surgery on his throwing arm, and consider finding a condo in Minneapolis once the procedure is finished.

Of course, the one thing everyone knows about Brett Favre today is that he does not process anything in a way that any normal person would, but rather through the eyes of a man who does not understand the concept of ‘going out on top.’ Thus, the likelihood that Favre will don a Vikings jersey this year is increasing quite quickly…we just hope the old man has enough gas left in the tank to put it on every Sunday!

Broncos Nab Young Gun Josh McDaniels

1/12/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Sports

Mile High City residents either rejoiced or repented their fate Sunday as the Denver Broncos announced Josh McDaniels as its new top staffer. McDaniels hails from New England where he earned serious cred as the ringleader for Tom Brady’s—and then Matt Cassel’s—high-octane offense. The hire comes just days after owner Pat Bowlen’s firing of longtime Broncos head coach (and Denver staple) Mike Shanahan, a 14-year presence with a winning record and back-to-back Super Bowls in 1998 and 1999.

McDaniels spent his first eight years in the NFL with the Patriots, starting as a personnel assistant and working his way to the top as prettyboy Tom Brady and his dominant offense came to power in the AFC, winning a couple of Super Bowls early in the decade. Now, he’ll be the youngest coach ever to take over the Broncos organization—a team that’s put up big offensive numbers but narrowly missed the playoffs each of the past three years—at 32 years of age. McDaniels beat out six other potential candidates for the coveted coaching job, including the New York Giants’ preeminent defensive specialist Steve Spagnuolo.

Coach McDaniels will leave one prolific offense for another; Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler is one of the league’s best passers and a rising star along with wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal.

Burress Protects Himself, Wrecks Himself

12/01/08 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Sports

New York Football Giants star Plaxico Burress acidentally shot himself in the leg Saturday while fumbling for a handgun which broke away from his waistline, ran a fly route down right pant-leg, and was stopped just shy of the knee line.

Burress, who was accompanied on his night out by teammate Antonio Pierce, tried to get into Manhattan’s LQ nightclub but was having a hard time persuading the bouncer to make an exception to the club’s “No Concealed Weapons” policy. Plaxico was adorned in jewels suitable for any Superbowl winning touchdown reciever, and claimed he needed the firearm to protect himself inside the club, which featured a LatAsian (Latin + Asian) theme, a relaxing lounge area, and iPod mixing sensation ‘Bongo’ Benito Sandoval. He was finally allowed in, an accomplishment he celebrated with several drinks. Later, as he was being led into a VIP area, he fumbled the weapon, accidentally discharging it and sending a bullet through his right thigh, which already suffered from a hamstring injury acquired this season. Pierce rushed to his aid, sources say, and informed the injured Burress that bringing the gun out was a bad idea, a piece of advice coming just slightly too late.

As any responsible pair of championship-winning professional athletes would, the mischievous pair decided not to call emergency personnel, and instead broke to Plaxico’s Totowa, NJ Mansion to regroup over more mixed drinks and pizza bagels prepared by the Mrs. Burress. Plaxico is facing up to 3.5 years in prison, but will no doubt be well-liked in any New York state prison for shooting that prick Plaxico Burress in the leg.
