Scientology On Trial In France

5/27/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

The always controversial Church of Scientology met opposition in France, where accusations of fraud recently brought six church leaders to trial. Scientology faces the threat of being banned in the country, which has apparently been a lucrative target for its business side. Several plaintiffs claim that they were pressured into joining the church, a situation that led to them spending tens of thousands of euros on books, lessons, and potato clock that supposedly read their personalities.

The church’s legal representation insists that the dispute is over the possible occurrence of embezzlement and not whether or not the organization is, in fact, a religion. While joining the church requires a substantial monetary investment and the seeking out of recruits through the social networks of members, Scientologists swear that this is not a pyramid scheme. Although if it were…genius.

Following the complaints, several former members retracted their claims. The church of Scientology paid them off in amounts sufficient to cover their losses, raising even more questions about the inner workings of this somewhat cultish religion. In the end, however, it looks like Scientology is fueled by the same thing that drives every organization of human beings: $.

France Flaunts // Money Talks

3/31/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under International Affairs

Flaunting their proud tradition of both rudeness and giving up, French representatives have threatened to walk away from this week’s G20 summit if their specific demands for tighter financial regulation are not satisfied. French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde told the BBC program Hardtalk (which airs just before Dirty Talk at 11pm) that President Sarkozy would not put his Jean Hancock on any document if
“the deliverables are not there”.

France favors stronger measures for financial regulation than do the U.S. and U.K. Despite France’s adamant stand on strict regulation Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Brown have high hopes that the international economic pow wow could go a long way towards boosting the world from the throes of it’s monetary woes. France’s early exit would prove a detriment to both leaders and those hopes. Despite the prospect of petulant behavior hanging in the air, Prime Minister Brown, in addition to regulation, has issued a call for “moral boundaries” to enhance the way we do business. If you’re looking for a definition of “moral boundaries” look up “Bernie Madoff” on wikipedia and then imagine the opposite.

Two people were killed in the crash, which happened on Thursday, and as of today the remaining five passengers are still missing.

A witness on French radio reported that the plane was doing fine until it took a right turn towards the water. “I could see it was an airliner because I saw two large engines. There was no fire, nothing,” the guy said. “It was flying straight, then it turned brutally toward the ground. I said to myself, it will never pull out, and there was a big spray of water.

Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe said that the cause of the crash is not yet known.
