The Obama Money Back Guarantee

The Story: Obama is putting his foot down and calling out the banks.  While he’s at it, how bout’ taking it a bit further.

The Search: Obama Banks

Perhaps president Obama didn’t realize who he was dealing with when he promised last years big financial bailout. The very same companies whose greed and unscrupulous behaviors created a bubble that burst on all of us were given the task of fixing things. No one in the executive branch considered that these guys might just use the bailout to take care of themselves, as they have always done, and move on with the task of making gigantic stacks of money. It came to light recently that this exactly what happened, with banker bonuses reaching seven digit figures while consumers are seeing no real benefit from the financial institutions that should have been fixed. Looking back, Barack Obama sees his blunder and is scrambling to fix it. Today he called for banks to repay what he called a ‘financial crisis responsibility fee’ of $117 billion.

While we’re getting paid back for things, how about a few other past expenditures?

Underemployment benefits–That whopping 10% unemployment rate is scary, until you look at the measurement and it gets scarier. It only accounts for those filing for unemployment, and you can only do that if you once had a job. It doesn’t include kids who graduated from college into this hell mess and don’t have the experience to get a job or a job to get the experience. Adding in these masses paints a much sorrier picture, and these people are a very real part of the potential work force that is not participating in the economy. Why not stimulate this segment with a little spending cash to give rise to the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans in their creative prime? (more…)

Know When to Fold ‘Em

The Story: After blowing over 127 million at the casino, on ex-wealthy Vegas goer is suing the Casino.  Here are some tips on when to cash out your chips and call it a night.

The Search: Watanabe

Anyone who knows that Kenny Rogers has a career other than rotisserie chicken entrepreneur, should also be well-versed in the country crooner’s simple yet sage five-step gambling strategy:
1. Know when to hold ‘em.
2. Know when to fold ‘em.
3. Know when to walk away.
4. Know when to run
5. Never count your money when you’re sitting at the table; there’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing’s done.

Judging by a record one-year losing streak that cost him and netted Vegas casinos $127 million, Terrance Watanabe has probably never even heard of Gambler’s Anonymous. Having amassed a hefty deficit at both the Rio and Caesar’s Palace accounting for 5.6% of their revenue for the year, the party favor import tycoon is now suing Harrah’s Entertainment Inc charging that they kept him pretty much wealthy in drink and drugs while he consistently bet on black only to see it come up red.  While the real-life casino cooler’s case may hold some water, we find it slightly hard to justify litigation on an industry whose main goal is to get you to happily squander your fortune.  You’d figure that after you lose your first $5 million or so you might want to rethink your decision to take part in the World Series of Three-Card Monty. The hopeless high roller was probably confronted with more than a few signs that he probably should’ve heeded before it got out of hand, and we’re spelling them out so you don’t make the same mistake.

1. The Cast of “The Biggest Loser” is in town yet everyone keeps using that name to describe you.
2. The Vodka-soda you ordered tastes more like your own salty tears after a few hands. (more…)

$31,400 Big Ones are Gone With the Wind

5/15/09 - Posted by Mara Siegler under Hot Topics

A convertible seems like an easy enough machine to operate without express, detailed instructions. But this is the wrong perception. Lacking an “idiot shield,” sometimes also referred to as a “roof,” this automobile can be tricky.

Case in point: A 23 year old German man, described as “not an experienced convertible driver,” took an Audi A3 Cabriolet out on the road for a test drive.  Having watched one too many Geico commercials, he set a stack of $31,400 (minus eyes),  meant to purchase the car, on his back seat to remind himself how much he could have saved on his last car insurance.  Then he took to the open road.
As the laws of physics could have predicted, the money flew out and scattered. Police were called and the road was shut off. After a half an hour of searching, $27,300 was recovered. The rest was left on the side of the street for some lucky bum to find, as part of the He Should’ve Known Better tax.
