Jackson Biography Draws the Attention of Hollywood & Interweb

In a triumphant posthumous return to the trending topics, Michael Jackson reared his beautifully-singing head on the social web when chatter about the release of his film biography reminded everyone just how influential his passing was. The new picture documents the life of the icon, along with (very) recent footage of Jackson prepping for his massive one-city stand in London (which this writer had tickets to, dammit).

In addition to several relevant celebrities, the premier of This Is It drew over 1.8 million online viewers which, at the price of $11 a move ticket (yeah, that’s what they cost now), translates to almost $20 million in revenues alone. It seems that the film will likely put a miniature dent in the debt left to Jackson’s family, and based on reviews, will give the public a chance to remember the pop icon in a positive light–Which is obviously the goal of Joe Jackson, the world’s first and only altruist.

Love Affair With a Bad Romance

Being Twittophiliac and understanding “what’s so great” about pop songs go hand in hand, evidenced by the massive response Lady Gaga’s new song ‘Bad Romance’ has garnered in the wacky world of status updates.  Just leaving your realtime search unrefreshed for a mere 30 seconds will have you missing countless intentionally grammatically incorrect words of praise for the 23 year old pop icon who’s new single just hit airwaves today after premiering at the Alexander McQueen runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

PETA and the Pet Shop Boys

4/10/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Gossip

The world’s most obnoxious (albeit admirable) nonprofit organization is at it again: BBC reported Thursday that PETA, a frontrunner in silly and/or disturbing campaigns against the cruelty of animals, had asked iconic rock band Pet Shop Boys to change their name to reflect a more forward-thinking stance on the treatment of furry creatures. Not surprisingly, the Boys gracefully declined the concept, citing the fact that Rescue Shelter Boys is a pretty dumb name and after ten albums, it might be a little late to get people chanting that at concerts.

Original members Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe did suggest the idea was something “worth thinking about” and we couldn’t agree more; but next time, PETA, maybe reach out to an artist who isn’t already world-renowned.

Sounds Phishy: Cops Score 1M of Drugs at Concert

3/10/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under US

In a story that’s likely to shake the small foundation of people who call music their “drug of choice,” it was reported this weekend that Virginia police spirited away over one million dollars (please, nobody even think of making an Austin Powers joke. That’s so 12 years ago) in illegal substances and over $68,000 in cold hard cash from fans this past weekend at Phish’s three-night reunion celebration run in Hampton.

The dense narc presence also resulted in 194 arrests, but the most damage to the musical event was done by the lack of circulating tabs and spliffs, without which fans had to experience several minutes of the headlining band riffing on the same chord for up to 15 minutes at a time. Some concert goers even reported “moments of clarity” and left mid-show. In a related story, the local Journey tribute band playing just down the street totally rocked.

Not So (S)Miley Now: Radiohead Snubs Pop Tart

3/06/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under OneRiot News

One of music’s most influential and boundary-breaking artists, Miley Cyrus, has recently become the target of a vicious smear campaign. It seems that British rock band Radiohead recently got too big for their britches and actually snubbed the pop icon backstage at the Grammy Awards. I think I speak for all of us when I ask, who in the hell do Radiohead think they are?

Cyrus relayed dirty details of the cold-shouldering in an interview on the Johnjay & Rich Show this past Tuesday, suggesting that the over-the-hill English upstarts, known mostly for some grunge song that came out back in like 1991, told the singer thanks but no thanks when she requested a face-to-face meeting. It’s common knowledge that Cyrus channels Radiohead in most of her music—though we have no idea why—and she felt the band would be honored to speak with someone of her experience. Yet such was not the case: “If someone, like, said that, like, ‘I would cry if I met them. I really want to meet them,’ I would freaking, like, run and, like, give them the biggest hug in the world because that’s cool, you know. But they were like, ‘We don’t really do that.’

It goes without saying that everyone at OneRiot will be boycotting Thom Yorke and his band of sissy dandies from here on out… in fact, we might even do something really drastic - like call the karma police. Yeah, watch the f out.

To the Shock of No One, Nickelback Tops Suck List

12/10/08 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under Music

Controversy has arisen among the peanut gallery in regards to one of the more contested honors in modern pop culture: Who is the worst band in the world? Finally, we have an answer.

Some might be inclined to give this honor to Insane Clown Posse, Limp Bizkit or even pseudo-religious misfits Creed, but thanks to search query stats on a number of search engines, it’s become quite clear that Nickelback is, in fact, a cut above (below?) all the rest, and the fair winner of 2009’s award.

Granted, I’ve spent countless drunken nights belting my own ham-handed rendition of “How You Remind Me” directly into the faces of complete strangers, but it comes as no great surprise that Alberta, Canada’s Nickelback is widely recognized by non-self-hating people everywhere as the world’s worst band. Sure, they’ve sold millions of records– but apparently to become the world’s worst band you must first become one of the world’s most successful.

Obama: Changing the Hip Hop Game

12/10/08 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Life & Culture, Music, Politics

Rapper Common says Barack Obama’s presidency will directly influence the state of hip hop, a genre which Common is in love with, and Nas claims is dead .

The accomplished artist believes that hip hop artists “pick up what’s going on in the world and try to reflect that,” giving such examples as KRS One, Talib Kweli, and the ever enlightened Mystikal.

This optimistic view comes hand-in-hand with Common’s new record, Universal Mind Control, as an example of his vision for the future of hip hop. Apparently, reflecting the most current and relevant realities of the world around us involves attempting to “really make some music that was bright, that would be a little more lighthearted.” This kind of musical product, the rapper predicts, will exceed the popularity of (and replace) the more popular genres today: “I think hip-hop artists will have no choice but to talk about different things and more positive things.”

While it would be nice to think that ignorance, misogyny, and violence would no longer be condoned or even discussed in mainstream rap music because Barack Obama is in office, Common clearly missed the scores of mixtapes with the president-elect’s face on them, some of which contain lyrics that can be considered typical of most mainstream garbage out today. While Common’s endeavor is noble, his challenge for today’s rappers to enhance their content is being met with little consideration from mainstream artists. When asked to comment, Li’l Wayne is reported to have stated, “(Expletive Deleted) that (Expletive Deleted)! (Expletive Deleted)!”
