Scientology On Trial In France

5/27/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under International Affairs

The always controversial Church of Scientology met opposition in France, where accusations of fraud recently brought six church leaders to trial. Scientology faces the threat of being banned in the country, which has apparently been a lucrative target for its business side. Several plaintiffs claim that they were pressured into joining the church, a situation that led to them spending tens of thousands of euros on books, lessons, and potato clock that supposedly read their personalities.

The church’s legal representation insists that the dispute is over the possible occurrence of embezzlement and not whether or not the organization is, in fact, a religion. While joining the church requires a substantial monetary investment and the seeking out of recruits through the social networks of members, Scientologists swear that this is not a pyramid scheme. Although if it were…genius.

Following the complaints, several former members retracted their claims. The church of Scientology paid them off in amounts sufficient to cover their losses, raising even more questions about the inner workings of this somewhat cultish religion. In the end, however, it looks like Scientology is fueled by the same thing that drives every organization of human beings: $.

Scientology Sued Over Suicide

2/18/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Gossip, US

A Florida woman is suing the Church of Scientology, known for its famous members, somewhat cult status, and an origin story just slightly more outlandish than that of all monotheistic religions. The woman alleges that her son’s suicide occurred because his scientologist father denied him access to antidepressant medication prescribed to the 20 year old boy. The father, apparently under the encouragement of two other church members, locked up the meds in an act of adherence to his religious teachings, which stipulate that such medical treatments are just plain bad for the alien spirits that reside in each of us.

The Church of Scientology has denied any liability for the boy’s actions, stating that the church members who influenced the father were not leaders and that the entire happening took place off of church grounds. Yet to be blamed are violent video games, Marilyn Manson, and Florida’s lax gun control laws.

Presley Pipes up About Scientology

1/07/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Gossip

In the wake of Jett Travolta’s untimely passing, there have been accusations of the Travolta’s religion as a hindrance to treatment of the boy’s alleged autism, which may have prevented the events leading to his death. While Scientology meets skepticism and even abhorrence in the eye of the mainstream public, a reputable voice of trusted reason has broken the celebrity silence in response to this derision: that of Lisa Marie Presley.

“I know I have to speak out because the public respects me. I realize that you can’t trust Tom Cruise anymore, and Beck has never been a huge public advocate of our faith. But I am a real celebrity, with real accomplishments like being Elvis’ daughter, pretending to be married to Michael Jackson, and gaining and losing weight throughout my stint in the public eye,” said Presley on her MySpace blog.* “You could focus on all the crazy things about Scientology like Lord Xenu, Thetans, and meditative self-inflicted cigar burns… or you could see it for what it is: a transcendental faith experience based on a science fiction book that I would never have had if I wasn’t famous or if I didn’t have a crap ton of money. Why does no one want to understand?”

Presley went on to defend Scientology, claiming that it does not prohibit potentially life saving medical treatment. This wasn’t really explained in much detail, so in consideration of what else we’ve heard, it’s not really a good argument. Anyway. Nice try, Lisa.

*Ed note: So my writer tells me, which seems awfully unlikely and self-depreciating. However given that it is getting close to dinner, and it is Lisa Marie Presley we’re talking about… you decide.
