Busts 4 Justice Fight for a Fair Priced Rack

5/08/09 - Posted by Mara Siegler under Health, International Affairs

Marks & Spencer, a British retailer akin to Macy’s, has been charging more for larger bras in a clear display of prejudice against big breasts. The bigotry of the country towards large-meloned lasses is a well documented and embarrassing historical footnote, along the lines of its former irrational hatred towards other things men love such as booze, sports, easy women (of any size boob), and being given money for free. In more recent years however, many have stood up and supported D-cups, fighting for their right to get married and adopt children.

Facebook group Busts 4 Justice is just one such Huge Tits Rights support groups, and has been working on an arduous, full-nipped campaign to get the department store to lower its prices on tent-sized lingerie for a year. Finally, today, they have clinched a victory in the fight for pricing equality for all! Marks & Spencer has agreed to eliminate a surcharge on it’s DD and up sizes and even took out a full page ad, solemnly and poignantly apologizing for the oppressive hardship they’ve caused with the proclamation, “We Boobed!”

And while this is a bouncing, joyous occasion, it is just one battle in the war Busts 4 Justice must continue to fight.  They have released the following statement: “Busts 4 Justice remain committed to making things better for busty women on the high street, but for now we’re happy just to be able to encourage all ladies to reward themselves and their boobs with some properly fitted, fairly priced lingerie.” Justice!

Macy’s Deflating

2/04/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under US

It’s a sign of the times: another day of another several thousand employees hitting the unemployment line.

The latest culprit in the chopping block cavalcade is the department store stalwarts at Macy’s. With Americans saving all their money for a day when the economic forecast ain’t so rainy (and the retail market sagging thusly), the company announced yesterday that it would be slashing some 7,000 employees, up to 4% of it’s work force. The cuts not only encompass 40% of the company’s corporate sector, but 5,100 of those positioned to get pink slips are currently employed at Macy’s and Bloomingdales stores across the country. This means that while customers will soon be able to breeze through the beauty aisles with the probability of being aggressively spritzed with Liz Taylor’s White Diamonds, they’ll also find little guidance when searching for the perfect tie to pair with their black and purple striped button down.

In addition to the cuts, the company (which runs 840 stores) is centralizing their corporate structure and responsibly recommending that executive prerequisites such as company cars, merchandise discounts, company-paid life insurance and financial counseling be reduced. With fiscal earnings for the beginning year estimated to be dramatically below projections, the moves could potentially save the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade hosts around $400 million in expenses. That should help keep the company afloat.

What Kind Of Training? Wal-mart Training, Sir.

12/02/08 - Posted by Evan Kessler under US

Here’s a riddle for ya: What’s completely intangible and believed to be capable of stopping two thousand crazed “Black Friday” bargain hunters?

…Give up?

Training. That’s the answer according to the lawyer for the family of the Mineola, Long Island Wal-mart employee trampled this past week amidst the rush of rabid consumers.

Jdimytai Damour was 6 feet 5 and 270 pounds, and was thus placed in front of the store, despite working there only a week and never having been trained in crowd control. Damour subsequently died from asphyxiation as the hopelessly greedy and unruly mob of consumers ran him over en route to getting the great deals and low, low prices on items ranging from Big Screen TVs to Wal-mart-exclusive apparel. While a little crowd handling ability may have aided the situation a tad more favorably, it’s a giant leap of faith to bet that any customers willing to break down electronic doors in pursuit of capitalistic bliss would really be quelled by a large body, a smiling face, not to mention a simple request to carry out their shopping in a more orderly fashion.

Shopping Gets Gnarly This Holiday Season

12/01/08 - Posted by Evan Kessler under US

Wal-mart employees trampled to death; shootings at Toys ‘R’ Us; hold-ups at a Miami mall: signs of the Apocalypse or merely scientific proof that humans evolved from more animalistic brethren? Neither, ’tis just the start of gift-giving season in the United States of America.

This past Friday, despite a flagging economy, consumers attempted to beat the swarms en route to a new X-Box 360 or nose hair trimmer. Shoppers lined up outside many a store to ensure that they wouldn’t be buying goodies for those they hold dear at the last minute, and stormed the opening times with such intensity that a life was taken in the process.

Retailers noted day after Thanksgiving crowds were slightly smaller than in recent years, and that most shops relied on hefty discounts to entice the thinning herd into buying everything from dollhouses to big screen TVs. While the cut-rates led to a surprising 3% increase in Black Friday sales from last year, the consumer tendency to go for on-sale items left much to be desired in the area of profit margin.

This year’s early shopping frenzy was marked less by focus on must-have items like Wii Fit and Elmo Live and more on practical, less extravagant items like mouthwash and bindles. Customers chose to
stay within their budget rather than splurge. However, many retailers seem optimistic about their profit prospects while tempering lower expectations after the modest beginning to the shopping season. The
good news is, for anyone that didn’t break an arm or leg in the initial surge for savings, you still have about a month to get something for someone you want to convince that you care for.
