Six More Weeks

2/02/10 - Posted by Evan Kessler under Hot Topics

Bright and early on this the morning of February 2nd in the year two-thousand and ten, the holy groundhog known as Punxsutawney Phil emerged from the safety of his cushy apartment in a tree stump at the Gobbler’s Knob section of town to briefly focus his ocular cavities on the ground below.  The latest incarnation of the United States most legendary rodent came to spy his own silhouette thereby decreeing that a continued dose of wintry hellfire would be inflicted upon the residents of this fair nation, from sea to shining sea. Before taking refuge back in his humble abode, the hermetic hog made sure to warn the people against the worship of false idols specifically citing the existence of one “Staten Island Chuck” who he claimed was, “nothing but a two-bit fraud like that L. Ron guy or most psychics.” So now that we’re all but certain to be steeped in six more weeks of blistering cold before the sun doth shine again, here are a few more things we should expect in the remaining weeks of the frost-bitten season:

The Rise of The Snowman Border Patrol- With continued cold comes the possibility for snowstorms. Many a heap of fresh powder will be used by this nation’s schoolchildren to create a veritable militia of immobile snowpeople hell bent on standing guard over wintry landscapes.  We can let them take over or we can commission them to line the Canada-US border and equip them with rifles so as to discourage illegal immigration from the great white north.  This will not work along the US-Mexico border or if it rains. Surprise! It’s Winter in America

The Story: It’s cold.  It’s winter.  It’s expected.  Why is this headline news?

The Search: Winter Weather

As Gil Scott-Heron says, it’s winter in America, and despite the fact that it has become winter in America year after year since before our nation existed, it’s news that still makes the front page. It’s true that temperatures are dropping to horribly wintery levels across the country. Typically warm places are seeing lows that rival 50 year old records. MSNBC referred to the icy front as ‘icebox conditions’. News reports are coming in from affiliates in all regions telling of precipitation unbound. While it is a kick in the pants, it’s winter, and winter has been sucking in a similar fashion since we named it Winter (derived from the Germanic root Vetr which literally translates to ‘F*%& everything’).

We are growing sick of the front page space wasted on winter every year, and would like to remind major news outlets of a few obvious things that are happening, but that we don’t mention.

There are cockroaches

We all know that there are cockroaches, and perhaps we don’t talk about them because we find them disgusting. Then again, a deep thinker would say that we don’t want to acknowledge the existence of a far more durable organism that will one day inherit the earth. This is an insight we don’t hear much about because what’s running CNN is not exactly deep thinking. (more…)

We Aught to Be Ashamed

The Story: 2009 has come and gone.  Here are a few areas we can still use some improvement in 2010.

The Search: 2010

Today is the Winter Solstice.  While it is the shortest day of the year and first official day of Winter, it’s also a solemn reminder that time remaining in this decade some of us refer to as “the aughts” is running out.  In a mere ten day’s we’ll be ringing in the 10’s and the previous decade will be but a footnote in history.  Sure, much has been accomplished in that span, but there have also been plenty of missed opportunities the likes of which we will never have back.  Rather than pat ourselves on the back by looking at the societal achievements of the past decade, we’re taking a rather sobering look at some things that just didn’t happen that must be corrected in the near future in order to give 2010 and beyond that onward and upward feeling.

Flying Cars- All of the movies that we saw as children (but mostly Back to the Future 2) pretty much said that Flying cars would be a reality by now.  Sure, there’s a car that can be converted into a plane, but it’s not the same.  Instead our technological advancements have centered on the ability to give status updates from the toilet, rather than the ability to float around on a hoverboard or fly your pod to your cousin’s house in Arizona.  And has anyone even started working on home teleportation devices yet? C’mon, this is the 21st century. (more…)

Make the Weather Less Frightful

The Story: As winter weather creeps in, here are a few tips on how to stay warm.

The Search: Winter Storm

Americans were given a rude awakening as a cold front descended upon the continental US faster than you can say “The Day After Tomorrow” for the 800th consecutive time. The swath of wintry conditions has caused three deaths from California to Indiana since it engulfed the nation on Monday.  The iciest air of the season is expected to smother land east of the Mississippi and Southern Canada through at least Thursday, with winter storm watches in effect over places like Northern Iowa, Southern Minnesota, and possibly somewhere Canadian like Thunder Bay, Ontario. While you’ve been hesitant to break out those snow boots and gloves, we think now might be a good time to take those long johns out of storage and make sure the heating bill has been paid. In addition to those obvious preparations for the arrival of Jack Frost, we’ve come up with some less apparent essentials to get yourself ready for when the weather outside is frightful.

Matches- Fire is so delightful.  If your heat isn’t working for some reason or you find yourself stranded out in the cold, matches will come in handy for setting something on fire, whether it be a coat sleeve or your couch.

screen-shot-2009-12-08-at-25510-pmHot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes- Whether you’re home alone or with that special someone, having the smooth sounds of Isaac Hayes 1969 album playing in the background will keep you warm all winter long, like a soothing mug of hot buttered rum.

Hot Buttered Rum- In case your music player gets frozen and doesn’t work any longer, you should always have a soothing mug on hand to stay cozy. (more…)

Itching for Some Snowtastic Action?

10/21/09 - Posted by Jennifer Hodges under Riotfeeds Spotlight

picture-1924While we’ve just began to dust off those dangling dancing  skeletons and pick out a couple of pumpkins for our doorstep, another more icicly season is creeping  upon us.  Sure, we still have a couple months before winter is in full force, but it hasn’t stopped us from romantically longing for all the snowy goodness that winter brings.  This has resulted in us spending hours daydreaming of the slopes and checking countless Warren Miller films out to get psyched for the upcoming season.  (However we’re technically not supposed to mix our favorite pastimes with work, so we decided to create a little loophole and make it our work.)
