Clipta Hosts a Mighty Meetup

10/13/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under Industry

picture-297

On October 28, our friends at Clipta Video Search are hosting a meetup. It’s happening at San Francisco’s Mighty, it’s free, and it’s the same week as Halloween, which means the free drinks we’ll find there will be a nice warm up for the kind of partying we’ll be doing three days later. In addition to feeding us pizza, spooning vodka down our throats, debuting something top secret and sharing over $1000 worth of prizes with attendees, Clipta will be bringing three exciting people to the stage to chat innovation in online video - including OneRiot’s own Tobias Peggs.

Read up on the official info, then RSVP here. Space is limited, so snap your spot up and be sure to let us know you’re coming - we’re excited to meet you there.

Zibb Business Search Goes Realtime

10/07/09 - Posted by Carmel Hagen under Industry, OneRiot News

picture-740Today Reed Business Information used OneRiot’s API to add realtime results to the search pages at Zibb.com, adding another layer of relevancy to their industry-specific search results.

Say, for example, I’m a Typographer, and I want to get a broad sense for the state of my industry as a whole. A traditional search engine would give me this (basically answering the question: what is typography?) but a search on Zibb will open several interesting windows. What’s the latest typography news? What are my competitors up to? What is my industry buzzing about today (cue OneRiot!).

10-7-2009-6-20-07-pm

The layer of information that realtime results are adding to this customized search environment is exciting, and we’re thrilled about this amazing use of our API. Congrats to Zibb on their successful launch - we can’t wait to see what Reed properties this lands on next!

Monetizing the Realtime Web

This week, we announced RiotWise - a way for publishers of quality content to reach users of realtime web applications, and a way for developers of those applications to monetize in a manner that also adds direct value to their users.

The response was very positive (thanks VentureBeat, thanks TechCrunch) and we’re excited to embark on this next phase of OneRiot’s growth.

sydneyrwf

We’ll be rolling out a pilot on OneRiot.com Search Results Pages in the coming days. This will help us experiment with various types of content, from a variety of sources, to help us optimize effectively before opening the door to partners in the coming weeks. The first implementation will appear on the “right-rail” of the page, and is titled “Featured Content.” It is “featured” (not “sponsored”) because we are choosing to feature links to a variety of relevant articles from across the web that will help us with our tests. This phase is a test campaign to monitor the user and content partner experience. No payment is changing hands during this test.

How does it work?

Based on OneRiot’s realtime search technology, the idea behind RiotWise is to match users to fresh, relevant content from our partners in realtime.

The service is grounded on the premise that users of realtime web apps are primarily trying to find out what’s going on right now for a particular topic. RiotWise serves up links to web pages from a content network that helps users find out what’s going right now. It directly matches the user’s intent - in other words, it adds value to the users’ experience; it helps them do what they are trying to do.

In lab testing, we’ve seen high Click Through Rates (CTRs) on RiotWise. Additionally, click throughs are highly qualified, and well targeted. The user clicking is trying to find out what’s going on right now for a particular topic, and they are being served links to content from quality publishers that exactly addresses that topic. This provides a great experience for the user, and a great audience for the content provider.

RiotWise is built from the ground up to be distributed across the realtime web. Any third party app will be able to grab a relevant content feed, serve it up to users in realtime, and get paid. Now remember, the content being served is fresh, high quality and relevant to the users. It’s totally in sync with the needs of the user of a realtime web app - which is great for distribution partners. They can now monetize by serving content that is useful to their users and adds value to their overall service. This is how to monetize on the realtime web.

If you have any questions about RiotWise, please feel free to comment on this blog, or email me, Tobias Peggs, directly (tobias@oneriot.com).

Cryogenics Coldly Abusive, Says Former COO

10/02/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Health, Science

picture-2316Though major religions describe the human body as an empty vessel void of the entity that made it a person, many with the means called bullshit on that theory by having their remains cryogenically frozen so that future, smarter generations could reanimate them without any groggy, zombie side effects. Many people, including late baseball legend Ted Williams, entrusted the treatment of their corpses to Alcor, a company that can be identified as a scam upon examination of its business model. Alcor responded to this trust by getting the Splendid Splinter’s head stuck in a tuna can. Read the rest of this entry »

Sorry, Chicago: Rio Takes 2016 Olympic Bid

10/02/09 - Posted by Christopher Reinhard under International Affairs, Sports

picture-2223

Lake Placid, Squaw Valley, Los Angeles; the list of American cities who have hosted their own star-spangled version of the modern Olympic Games is longer than most nations can say, at eight. But eight it shall remain, at least for now; Chicago has been eliminated from the cast of candidates for 2016’s summer session. In fact, the city’s bid was the first to be dismissed, leading to a hefty helping of social media chatter about what could have gone wrong.

The most influential person in America—Oprah Winfrey—showed her support for Chicago’s instatement as the home of the Games in Denmark this week, but even her powers were useless when it came time for the event’s committee to vote.

Tokyo was also eliminated from contention early, leaving Madrid and Rio De Janeiro in a face off that ultimately landed in the bejeweled hands of the latter. Get ready, Rio; you’ve got six years to lay on the sparkle, lay off the caipirinhas, and let Oprah cool off. See you in 2016.

The Flu and You // Part 2

10/01/09 - Posted by Abdullah Saeed under Health

picture-2119

Swine flu hasn't left anyone's mind, and it shows. 'H1N1‘ has been a trending topic for months, and it’s a good thing. Everyone is staying alert and not sleeping on something that’s got it out for the human race. And this isn’t like Y2K. This might happen. Before you know it, the epidemic will occur, families will be torn apart, and Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo will be racing against the clock to find an antidote.

So what’s the update? Well, there’s a vaccine soon to be widely available. But there’s all kinds of skepticism about a vaccine that hasn’t been extensively tested. In trying to protect yourself, you might just contract the virus. Read the rest of this entry »

Nike Squashes Vick’s Claim to Swoosh

10/01/09 - Posted by Evan Kessler under Sports

picture-1626 Nike may have been one of the last sponsors to cut and run on Michael Vick, but they’d like to make it abundantly clear that they’re anything but back on the the Philadelphia Eagles jack-of-all-bench positions endorsement bandwagon.

Mike Principe- one of Vick’s agents- announced yesterday that Vick had just signed a new deal with the Swoosh brand, Nike moved quickly to nullify the statement, admitting that they were giving the convicted felon some free gear, but weren’t exactly chomping at the bit to name a whole line of sneakers after the least popular player at the pound. Still if Nike should at one point feel the need to reverse their position on the matter we’ll be on the lookout for Nike Air Pine Riders or the Nike Air 3rd String QB - sounds like perfect prototypes for a new line of sneakers for benched athletes.
